Offensive Showcase by the Pats Leads Them Too a Win

Williamsburg, KY – 17th ranked UC scored 16 runs on 15 hits, for a 16-4 win over Milligan on Tuesday afternoon. Both Sujel Arias and Ray Villanueva had a perfect 4-4 day at the plate, as the Pats advance to 15-9 on the season.

Walter Hernandez got the start and pitched 6.0 innings, as he scattered eight hits for four runs, one walk, and four strikeouts. Jared Shelton came in relief and pitched 1.0 innings. Shelton faced three batters and struck out all three in 12 pitches. Hernandez got the win and moves to 2-1 on the season.

Offensively, Arias and Villanueva led the way both going 4-4 with a home run and two doubles a piece. Villanueva also came away with a team high five RBIs, while Arias had three. Raphy Almanzar had a good day as well going 2-3 with a double and an RBI.

The offense got started early for the Pats as they scored five runs in their first at bat. With one out, ALmanzar hit a double down the left field line. Charlie Muniz stepped up and got an RBI single to right center. Arias followed that up with a homer over the right center fence, bringing home Kevin Perez who was courtesy running for Muniz. This gave UC the 3-0 lead. After a ground out, the Patriots would get back-to-back left field homeruns. Villanueva hit the first one for his second of the season, then Seth Benner notched his second homer of the season, for the 5-0 lead.

After a couple scoreless innings, the Buffaloes notched their four runs of the game in the top of the third. Cumberlands responded with two runs in their at bat. Arias started with a leadoff double to right center. Candido Encarnacion then hit a sacrifice fly to advance Arias to third. Villanueva followed with an RBI double down the left field line, for the 6-4 lead. Two batters later Andres Rolon got an RBI single to right field for his first hit of the game.

After a few more scoreless innings, UC still led 7-4. In the bottom of the fifth, UC added one more run. Arias would get a hit through the 5-6 hole. Then with one out Villanueva got an RBI single, and advance to third on a throwing error before getting left on base.

Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Patriots added eight runs to threaten the run rule. With one out, Sean Cheely singled up the middle, then two pitches later he stole second for his 12th stolen base of the season. Almanzar stepped to the plate and single to left field, allowing Cheely to make it home for the 9-4 lead. After Muniz got hit by a pitch, Arias notched his second double of the day, this time down the right field line, which brought home another run. After a walk from Encarnacion, Villanueva hit his second double of the day, scoring two runs for the 12-4 lead. Benner then got walked, and Encarnacion scored on the play as the pitch turned into a passed ball. Daniel Maldonado then came into pinch hit for Rolon, and he took full advantage of his opportunity, hitting a ball clear over the left field fence for a three-run homer.

With the Pats leading 16-4 going into the seventh, the Buffaloes needed to score at least two runs to continue the game. But Shelton had other plans, he notched three straight strikeouts to end the game in the seventh due to the run rule.

The Patriots are set to be back in action tomorrow at Lindsey Wilson for a non-conference match-up. The start time is set for 3 pm EST.
