Patriots Sting Bees Behind 10 Second Quarter Goals

Williamsburg, KY – Thomas Fogarty and Dylan Crouch combined for 10 first half goals, while two other Patriots netted hattrick as third-ranked UC men's lacrosse defeated SCAD 22-6 Wednesday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  With the win, Cumberlands improves to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in AAC play, while the Bees move to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Fogarty finished the game tying his career-high with nine points (five goals, four assists), which is also third most in program history. Crouch dished out a pair of assists to go along with five goals as Christian Vanover and Breckin Sharkey each netted hat tricks in the game.  Dawson Coltran added three points in the win.

Defensively UC recorded a season-high 19 caused turnovers led by Jake Morgan who added five in the first half along with four ground balls.  CHrystian Coleman tallied three caused turnovers and six ground balls, while Taylor Long and Schylar Chapman combined for four caused turnovers and 12 ground balls on the day.  Will Settle made six saves to earn his seventh win of the season.

SCAD struck first with a goal 30 seconds into the game, however, the Patriots answered with back-to-back goals by Fogarty to take a 2-1 lead.  The Bees evened the score and minutes later Jacob Bush forced a turnover and in the transition Vanover connected with Fogarty for the hattrick putting UC back in front 3-2 with 4:35 left in the first quarter.  Crouch added a goal late in the period as he dodged from behind the cage and put a well-placed shot into the upper corner making it 4-2.

The Patriots dominated the second quarter outshooting SCAD 20-2, scooping 15 ground balls to the Bees 4 and outscoring SCAD 10-1.  Cumberlands took advantage of a SCAD penalty early in the period as Crouch found Vanover for the man-up goal to extend the lead to 5-2.  The Patriots tallied four more goals over the next three minutes, including three straight from Crouch to extend the lead to 9-2 midway through the second quarter.  UC's attacking trio of Crouch, Fogarty, and Vanover combined for the next four goals making it 13-2.  SCAD added a goal, before Morgan forced a turnover and found Chapman for a transition goal giving the Patriots a 14-3 lead at the break.

Cumberlands defensive continue their intensity in the third quarter notching three caused turnovers over the first five minutes, while Fogarty found Vanover for his third goal of the game.  Sharkey added a pair of goals in the quarter, however, SCAD outscored the Patriots 3-2 over the final ten minutes cutting the lead to 17-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

Coltran added a pair of goals, while Sharkey completed his first collegiate hattrick to open the fourth quarter, making it 20-6.  UC added two more goals in the quarter, while the Patriots defense forced 10 turnovers for the 22-6 final.

The Patriots will return to the field Wednesday, March 30, when they travel to Athens, TN to face eighth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan.  The game is set for 3 p.m.
