UC Falls to 8th Ranked Georgia Gwinnett

Williamsburg, KY– 25th ranked Patriots could not overcome the fast start from the Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon as they fell 12-4. Cumberlands drops to 20-11 on the season.

Thomas Gutierrez got the start as he pitched 2.0 innings allowing six hits for six runs, no walks and three strikeouts. Gutierrez got his first loss as a Patriot as he moves to 4-1 on the season. Hunter Rigsby came in and pitched 5.0 innings giving up five hits, three runs, four walks, and six strikeouts. Gabriel Ramos and Jake Kampen also made appearances.

Offensively, Raphy Almanzar hit the lone homerun for the Pats, and both Sujel Arias and Ray Villanueva hit one double apiece.

It was all Grizzlies to start the game as they put up six runs in the first two innings for a 6-0 lead. UC would finally get on the on the board in the bottom of the third as Luis Alvarez reached first on an error. Sean Cheely followed with a single to right field and Alvarez advanced to third. Almanzar then grounded into a double play as Alvarez went home to score.

After Georgia Gwinnett added one more to their lead in the top of the fourth to make it 7-1. Almanzar responded in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to left field.

Gwinnett went on to expand their lead to 12-4 over the next few innings. The Patriots made one last come back effort in the bottom of the eighth but ultimately fell short. That half inning, saw a leadoff double from Arias. Then two batters later Villanueva hit an RBI double down the right field line to cut the lead to 12-3. Seth Benner got walked as Villanueva advanced to third on the wild pitch. Daniel Maldonado came into pinch hit and singled through the left side for an RBI to get the score to 12-4.

Cumberlands are back in action Tuesday March 29th to take on 2nd ranked Tennessee Wesleyan at 6 pm.
