Patriots Comeback Falls Short Against 2nd -ranked Tennessee Wesleyan

Williamsburg, KY– Cumberlands tries to rally late but comes up short 6-4 in a pitcher's duel of a game against the Bulldogs on Tuesday evening. UC drops to 20-12 on the season.

Gabriel Ramos got his first start of the season as he pitched 4.2 innings allowing five hits for five runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Garrett DeClue came in relief and finished the game, as he pitched 4.1 innings only allowing one run on three hits and six strikeouts. Ramos would get credit for the loss.

At the plate, Candido Encarnacion led the way as he went 3-4, with a homerun and two doubles for three RBI. Seth Benner went 1-4, with his lone hit being a homerun.

Tennessee Wesleyan got their offense started early notching three runs in their first at bat. UC answered with two runs of their own as Sean Cheely reached on a fielding error. Two batters later Charlie Muniz reached on a fielder's choice, and Cheely would get caught in a rundown for UC's second out. Kevin Perez came into courtesy run for Muniz, and Sujel Arias singled up the middle allowing Perez to go to second. Encarnacion stepped up and hit his first double of the day for two RBIs, as Perez and Arias scored, closing the gap to 3-2.

After a scoreless inning, the Bulldogs scored one run in the top of the third, for the 4-2 lead. Encarnacion answered with a solo homerun over center field, to cut the gap 4-3.

The Patriots was able to hold the Bulldogs scoreless in their next at bat, allowing them to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Benner led off and notched his third homer of the season to tie the game at 4-4.

Tennessee Wesleyan was able to score one run in the top of the fifth before DeClue came in and got a strikeout to end the inning. After a couple scoreless innings, the Bulldogs scored an insurance run to extend their lead to 6-4. UC was able to get one on base, but some great pitching held the Patriots at bay.

After taking a weekend off from MSC play, UC will travel to Campbellsville, KY to take on Campbellsville this weekend in a three-game series starting Friday April 1st at 3 pm.
