Milligan College, TN – The #15 Cumberlands Patriots mounted their biggest comeback of the season to take down Milligan University, 6-4. The win gives UC a 27-14 record on the season and has them take the season series against the Buffaloes, 2-0.
With their backs against the wall in the seventh inning, down 4-0, the bottom of the Patriots' lineup ignited the offense.
Tori Malone started off the inning with a hard-hit ball that the second baseman could not handle, putting her on first. Next
Mackenzie Pawlak, laced the ball to the shortstop who tried to throw out Malone at second, but an errant throw put runners on first and second.
Hailey Wood then stepped into the box and sent the ball to right field for a double that scored UC's first run of the game. With Malone scoring, Pawlak on third and Wood on second it brought
Emily Jasper up. Jasper laced the ball down the left field line, scoring both Pawlak and Wood, and she stood on second for her third double of the season. With the score at 4-3, Jasper stole third and then
Maddie Sickau earned a free pass, putting
Emily Bryant at the dish. The Cecilia, KY native launched the ball over the left field wall, bringing around three runs and giving UC their first lead of the game. The home run is the seventh on the season for Bryant, marking the most she has hit in a season as a Patriot.
Cumberlands took their 6-4 lead to the bottom of the seventh inning and played shutdown defense. Two groundouts to Bryant at third and then
Morgan Radford capped the game with a strikeout swinging to seal the Pats victory.
The Buffaloes scored three of their runs in the first inning off three hits and a walk. They then added their fourth run in the bottom of the fifth off a wild pitch.
In the game, Jasper, Bryant and
Katie Cheeseman all had a pair of hits. Bryant collected three of the RBI along with Jasper at two and Wood with one.
Abby Whelan kept the seventh inning going with her first hit of the season, hitting the ball through the left side. The stolen base for Jasper gives her 40 on the season.
Talli Burgess got the start and went four innings, giving up four runs, one walk and striking out six. Radford came in for relief for three innings, giving up one hit while striking out one. Radford's efforts earned her the win, her 11
th of the season.
In the game, UC had 11 hits with seven of them going in the final inning. The comeback victory for Cumberlands marks the first time they have won a game after trailing in the fourth inning or later. The game against the Buffaloes is the final non-conference game of the regular season with UC having a 13-7 non-conference record.
The Patriots will head back to Mid-South Conference play when they travel to UPike for a four-game series. Game one is slated for a 2PM ET start on Friday, April 15.
