Patriots Capture MSC North Division Crown After Roaring Past #10 Tigers

Georgetown, KY – For the fourth consecutive season, the second-ranked Cumberlands women's lacrosse team has won the regular season conference title with an 18-4 win over tenth-ranked Georgetown.  The Patriots finish the season with a perfect 6-0 mark in conference play and improve to 16-1 on the season.

Olivia McCarrell led the way with a season-high 12 saves, eight of which game in the first half, as she turned away the Tigers offense multiple times.  Bella Ricchiazzi notched seven goals and finished with nine points, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers to lead the offense.  Rachel Leigh chipped in four points to record her 100th career point as Aleyah Belton, Katie Wharton, and Morgan Tate tallied three points apiece.

Trinity Brown notched eight draw controls and five ground balls and two caused turnovers.  The eight draw controls gives her 141 for the season makes Brown the single season record holder surpassing Samantha Tullar's mark of 140 set back in 2018.  Erin Bryant, Hannah Churchley, and Jael Cobb combined for five caused turnovers and seven ground balls on the back line.

UC struck first as Bella Ricchiazzi dodged in and fired a goal into the cage to give UC a 1-0 lead.  Trinity Brown won the ensuing draw control and on that possession Aleyah Belton connected with the back of the cage to make it 2-0.  Olivia McCarrell added three saves, while Hannah Churchley forced a turnover to keep the Tigers off the board.  The sophomore's third save led to a transition goal for Morgan Tate first of two straight goals extending the lead to 4-0 with 5:25 remaining.  Ricchiazzi added a goal and an assist as Cumberlands netted three of the final four goals in the period to take a 7-1 advantage.

Stephanie Meyer won the opening draw control of the second quarter and on the possession Ricchiazzi fired a shot into the corner of the cage to make it 8-1, 22 seconds in. The junior added two more goals, before Leigh found Reegan Hensley cutting in front of the cage for a goal to give UC an 11-1 edge.  That assist for Leigh was the 100th career point for the Northfield, CT native.  Morgan Terpstra added a goal at the 4:11 mark, while McCarrell picked up two more saves to give the Patriots a 12-2 lead at the break.

Cumberlands defense continued to hound the Georgetown (10-7; 4-2) offense as each team was limited to a goal over the first ten minutes of the third quarter.  Leigh dished out her third assist of the game late in the quarter as she connected with Tate for a goal.  UC took advantage of a pair of Tigers penalty as Ricchiazzi converted from the free position line to make it 15-3.  Georgetown looked to cut into the lead, however, McCarrell made another stop in the closing seconds of the period.

After a Tigers goal to open the fourth quarter, Meyer won the draw control and on the ensuing possession Marisa Helston made a well-placed shot extending UC's lead back to a dozen at 16-4. The Patriots added a pair of man-up goals with the final one coming from Katie Wharton for the 18-4 finish.

This marks the third time in program history that Cumberlands has recorded a perfect regular season conference record.  UC has now won 14 Mid-South Conference regular season games as well, which is the longest streak in conference history.

The Patriots will return the field Thursday, April 21, for the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.  UC is the #1 seed in the north division and will face the #4 seed in the south division at 11 a.m.
