Campbellsville, KY– The Patriots got two complete game shutouts, one by
Braxton Cottongame to get the 2-0 win over the Tigers in the first game, then one by
Thomas Gutierrez for the 7-0 win. UC also takes the series 2-1 as they move on to 22-13 on the season.
Game One
Cottongame got his first shutout of the season as he went 7.0 innings only throwing 87 pitches. He only allowed five hits and four walks with one strikeout as he moves to 5-2 on the season. On the offensive side
Sujel Arias and
Ray Villanueva both hit triples, while
Andres Rolon went 2-2 at the plate.
UC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after turning two double plays to get out of the first two innings. Rolon led off with a single to left field. After advancing to second on a groundout, Rolon scored as
Raphy Almanzar got an RBI single up the middle for the 1-0 lead.
After holding the Tigers scoreless in their next at bat, the Patriots added an insurance run in the top of the fourth. Arias led off with a triple to deep right field,
Candido Encarnacion followed with a RBI groundout, as Arias went home for the 2-0 lead.
Those two runs proved to be the only two runs of the game, allowing UC to get the 2-0 lead and tying the series up at 1-1.
Game Two
Thomas Gutierrez would get the start in game two as he pitched all 9.0 innings scattering seven hits, one walk and five strikeouts. He advances to 5-1 on the season. Villanueva went 3-3 with a triple, while both
Charlie Muniz and
Sean Cheely went 2-4 at the plate.
Cheely opened the game by getting hit by a pitch, then stole second a few pitches later. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Almanzar notched an RBI as he grounded out allowing Cheely to score for the 1-0 lead.
Cumberlands added another run to the lead in the second, as Villanueva got walked, then stole second two pitches later. After advancing to third, Villanueva scored on a balk for the 2-0 lead.
UC held Campbellsville scoreless, then proceeded to score two runs to extend their lead to 4-0. Cheely led off with an infield single as he beat out the throw from the second baseman. He would go on to steal second in the next couple pitches, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. On a dropped third strike, Cheely beat out the throwback to home from first base for the 3-0 lead.
Charlie Muniz followed with a single to left field, and
Kevin Perez came into courtesy run. Perez advanced to second on a groundout by Arias. Then Encarnacion singled to right field and was out at second but not before Perez crossed the plate for the 4-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, UC scored one run to extend their lead to 5-0. Villanueva got a leadoff single towards third base and beat out the throw. Rolon followed with a walk and Villanueva advanced to second, then third on a wild pitch. A couple plays later, Rolon advanced to second on a wild pitch and Villanueva went home on the throw from the catcher for the 5-0 lead.
After a couple of scoreless innings, the Patriots tallied one more run for the 6-0 lead in the top of sixth. Villanueva led off with a triple to right center. Then two batters later, Rolon got an RBI as he grounded out and Villanueva went home to score.
In the top of the eighth, UC added another run to extend the lead to 7-0. With one out, Encarnacion got walked and
Ryan Shavers came into pinch run. Villanueva then singled towards the pitcher and beat out the throw, and Shavers moved to second.
Seth Benner then notched a single to right field to load the bases. A few pitches later Shavers came home on a wild pitch for the 7-0 lead.
UC held that 7-0 lead through the ninth for the win. Cumberlands return home to take on Alice Lloyd on Monday April 4 at 4 pm.
