Waleska, GA – Meeting for the fourth time in the AAC title game, the third-seed Patriots couldn't overcome a six-goal second quarter as they fell to Reinhardt 15-12 Saturday afternoon. Cumberlands heads into the NAIA National Tournament with a 12-4 record on the season, while Reinhardt improves to 10-1.
Thomas Fogarty led the way for UC with three goals, three assists and six points, while
Dawson Coltran finished with a team-high four goals in the contest.
Dom Lulow added three points, while
Breckin Sharkey netted a pair of goals.
Noah Brandt led UC with three ground balls as
Will Settle made 15 saves between the pipes.
UC came out of the gates strong as Fogarty put the Patriots in front early with an unassisted goal. A minute later, Crouch dished out an assists to
Christian Vanover to extend the lead to 2-0. UC extended their lead minutes later as
Jake Morgan scooped the ground ball and on the ensuing possession Coltran found Lulow in front of the cage for a goal which made it 3-0. Fogarty netted his second of the period before the Eagles responded with three unanswered goals to give the Patriots a 4-3 advantage.
Sharkey got things going in the second quarter with his first goal to make it 5-3 with 9:51 remaining. Settle made five saves in the period, however, Reinhardt scored six unanswered goals to take a 9-5 lead with 2:40 remaining. Cumberlands cut into the deficit two minutes later as Lulow connected with Coltran for a goal to make it 9-6 at the break.
UC came out of the break strong getting goals from Fogarty and Coltran to pull within one at 9-8 with 10:00 minutes left. Reinhardt added a pair of goals before Fogarty dished out assists to
Nick Kava and Sharkey to pull within one at 11-10 with 4:54 remaining.
The Eagles added two goals to extend their lead to 13-10, before Coltran fired two lasers into the back of the cage to cut it to 13-12 with 8:36 remaining. UC looked for the equalizer but couldn't get a shot on frame as Reinhardt scored twice late for the 15-12 final.
Coltran, Fogarty, and Morgan were all named to the AAC All-Tournament Team for their efforts throughout the tournament.
Cumberlands will now await the seedings for the NAIA National Championships, which is set to be released Sunday, May 1. The quarterfinals of the NAIA Championships is set for Wednesday, May 11, in Pensacola, Florida.
