Cumberlands Ends Regular Season With Series Sweep Over Georgetown

Williamsburg, KY – After two extra inning games on the first day of the series, UC needed just 12 innings for the final day to take down Georgetown twice. Game three was won 2-1 and then the Patriots capped off the series with a 9-0, five inning run-rule victory.

Multiple hitters shined at the plate for the Patriots with seven of them hitting .400 or better on the day. Mackenzie Pawlak recorded two hits, four RBI and two runs scored. She blasted a two-run home run in the second game, her second of the season. Emily Jasper led all hitters with three hits while scoring twice, stealing two bases and racking up a RBI. UC had five extra base hits on the day after not getting any on day one. Hailey Wood was one of them with her team high fifth triple of the season.

Morgan Radford had one of her best outings in the circle of the season. She gave up just one hit in four innings of work while striking out a batter and not giving up a run. That was in the final game of the series, which had Kaci Goedde come in for the final inning and get three straight outs, solidifying the win. Kaiti White went 4.2 innings in game three, striking out three batters and giving up just three hits. Talli Burgess came in for the save, her fifth of the season, going 2.1 innings, giving up one run, while striking out one run.

GAME THREE: CUMBERLANDS CLINCHES SERIES WITH WIN, 2-1
Both teams had quiet innings to start with the first run not being scored until the third inning. White had three strikeouts through the first two frames.

Jasper kickstarted the offense in the bottom of the third inning from an infield single and then swiped second. With two outs on the board, Emily Bryant laced the ball up the middle, bringing home Jasper all the way from second to go up 1-0.

Cumberlands doubled their lead in the very next frame. Radford earned a leadoff walk and she was moved to second from a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Tori Malone. Meryn Livingston followed it up with a ball that one hopped the left field fence for the RBI double, making it 2-0 in favor of UC.

Georgetown did score their lone run of the game in the top of the seventh from a leadoff double, error and sac fly. With the tying run on second, two flyouts to Jasper in left field sealed the win and the series. For White she is now 8-3 on the season and Burgess got her fifth save, tying her own program record she set last season for a single season.

Before the start of game three in the series, Cumberlands honored four seniors of Katie Cheeseman, Goedde, Jenna Howell and Abby Whelan.

GAME FOUR: PATRIOTS SHUTOUT TIGERS (5 INNINGS)
This time UC wasted no time getting on the board, putting up two in the first. Wood put down a bunt single on the first pitch she saw. Jasper laid a bunt of her own down for the sacrifice. The speed of Wood was too much for the Tigers, getting her from first to third. Since Jasper put the second pitch she saw in play, it took UC just three pitches to get a runner to third in the game. Two batters later, Bryant walked to put runners on the corners. She took off for second and the catcher threw quickly back to the pitcher, however the throw was dropped and Wood was heads up to come home and score. Cheeseman followed it up with a ball through the 3-4 hole, moving Bryant from second to home for the RBI, making the score 2-0.

The second inning proved to be the biggest offensive frame on the weekend for the Patriots. Malone got a single to left field to start it. Paxton Hoop bunted and the third baseman dove at it trying to catch it. She was unsuccessful, allowing Malone to go first to third and Hoop standing on second. Pawlak was the next batter and she smacked the ball down the left field line scoring both, Malone and Hoop for the two-RBI double. The Tigers tried to throw Pawlak out at second but an errant throw got her to third. Maddie Sickau made sure to score Pawlak off a sac fly to left field, giving Cumberlands a 6-0 lead.

A three up, three down defensive top half of the third turned over to another big offensive inning this time three runs coming off three straight pitches. With Hoop aboard on a fielder's choice, Pawlak took the second pitch she saw and soared it over the left field wall for two more runs, putting the game at the eight-run rule. The very next pitch was to Wood who scorched the ball to left center field. It two hopped the fence and she raced around for the three bagger. Jasper stepped to the plate and for her first pitch she saw, she sent it to left center field for the RBI single, making it 9-0.

The Tigers started the fourth win a leadoff walk and got her to third off a sacrifice bunt and flyout to center. Then Radford settled in for the strikeout keeping the shutout alive. Goedde entered the game in the fifth and got the first three batters she saw down in order to complete the win off a flyout, groundout and lineout. The win went to Radford giving her a 13-7 record on the season.

For the series both Bryant and Pawlak recorded four RBI while Wood led the team in runs scored with four. UC swiped nine bases in the series giving them a regular season total of 105. As a team UC had 34 hits, outscored the Tigers 16-4 with 13 RBI.

In the circle, the Pats had a staff Era of 0.97 and held Georgetown to a .175 batting average against. All four pitchers had a personal ERA below 2.00, with both White and Goedde under 1.00.

This series marks the regular season finale for Cumberlands who finishes with a 35-14 record and a 21-7 MSC record. This marks the second straight season UC has gotten 20+ wins in conference.

UC will now turn their attention to the MSC tournament where they will host the opening round matchup in a best of three series next week. The dates and the opponent will be announced in the coming days.
