Patriots Capture First USA Archery Outdoor National Title

Chula Vista, CA – For the first time in program history the Patriots have earned the USA Archery Collegiate Outdoor National Championship after closing out the event with four podium finishes, including three national titles on Saturday.  Over the three day championships Cumberlands collected 13 podium finishes with six gold medals, four silver medals, and a trio of bronze medals to finish with 147 points.



Madison Cox opened the day capturing gold in the women's fixed pin division.  The top-seed faced 11th-seed Emily Dendinger and the pair was tied at 27-27 after the first end.  Heading into the third end Cox overcame a two point deficit in the third end and followed that up with a perfect 30 in the fourth end to take a three-point lead.  Both archers recorded a 26 in the fifth end to give the McKee, KY native a 138-135 win and the top spot on the podium. Cox becomes the first archer in program history to complete the individual triple crown earning a national title in all three phases in a single year.  This also is her fifth individual national title making her the program's career leader for individual gold, while the junior has reached the podium in all eight championships she has competed in.



Danielle Woodie was up next in the gold medal match of the women's compound division and knocked off fourth-seed Anna Scarbrough 141-139 to capture the national title.  After tying in the first end, Woodie carded a 29 in the second end to take a one-point lead.  The sophomore added to her lead after winning the fourth end 29-28 and shot a 28 in the final end to close out the match.  Woodie capped of a strong run in which she knocked off four of the top-six seeds en route to her second individual national title and first podium finish at the outdoor championships.  She also joins teammates Hannah Moose and Brooke Miller and the last three women's compound outdoor national champions.



The Patriots closed out the championship with strong performances in the mixed team competition. Cumberlands mixed compound duo of Marissa Harding and Cole Zeug went 3-0 on the afternoon to reach the gold medal match.  The tandem won their first two matches by a combined 32 point before meeting Union in the semifinals.  UC took three of the four ends to win 150-145 and advance to the gold medal match against Lindsey Wilson. After tying in the first end UC's tandem rattled off three straight 37's to defeat the Blue Raiders 147-140 and finish atop the podium. 



Cox followed up her individual title by teaming with Coby Hudson in the mixed fixed pin team division as they  entered as the third-seed.  The duo cruised to a 141-109 win in their first match to set up a quarterfinals against Texas A&M.  Trailing by three points midway through the match the tandem shot a 38 and 39 over the final two ends for the 148-147 final.  Cox and Hudson down by a point heading into the final end of the semifinals, however, rallied with a 34 to knock-off second-seed Pikeville 139-138 to advance to the gold medal match against Wabash Valley College.  The duo fell behind early in the championship match and there late rally wasn't enough as they captured the silver medal.  It was Cox's third medal of the championship, while Hudson notches his first podium finish at a national championship.

The mixed recurve team of Jacob Valentini and Whitney Vandiver blanked the University of Texas in the 1/8th match.  UC found themselves matched up with UPike in the quarterfinals as the Bears jumped out to a 4-2 lead.  The Patriots took the fourth end to force a one-arrow shoot-off, however, finished fifth overall.

Kennedy Sumpter and Ty Pennington entered as the top-seed in the mixed barebow division and won their first match 6-0. UC fell in the quarterfinals, however, tallied two points towards the team standings.

UC captured the title by 17 points over Texas A&M, while MSC rivals Pikeville, Lindsey Wilson and Union round out the top five.

This caps off an incredible season for the Patriots that including capturing the 2021 USA Archery 3D National Championships and the Mid-South Conference Championships while having a plethora of archers achieve recognition for their success. Cumberlands totaled three All-Around Shooters of the Year, 18 USA Archery All-Americans, the MSC Shooter of the Year, and two MSC Freshman of the Year.  The Patriots coaching staff was also named the MSC Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year as Strebeck was voted the USA Archery South Region Coach of the Year.
