Pair of Patriots Claim All-American Honors

5/24/2022 11:03:00 AM

Kansas City, MO - UC's men's tennis team caps off a stellar season with a couple more accolades as two Patriots were named All-Americans, announced the NAIA on Tuesday. Cumberlands placed multiple people on the list for the second time in the past three years and for just the fourth time overall as Martin Barbier was named a first teamer while Mattis Le Montagner made the list as a honorable mention.

Martin Barbier finds himself on an All-American list for the fourth time in his career while this being the second time he's been apart of the first team. Barbier put together one of his strongest campaigns as a Patriot during the 2021-22 season as he continued to add to his historic career. The native of Guadeloupe, France set career-highs in wins in both doubles and singles play with him winning 22 matches when playing alongside his partner Eric Banoub while winning 22 as well when going solo.

"He's been a great leader," said head coach Chin Tan "We have had a lot of good leaders and he's been one of the best because of his humility."

Martin showed himself to be the class of the MSC, winning the Mid-South Player of the Week award four different times for a new career best and the most of anyone in the conference. He put together the best season during his time in Williamsburg when going up against MSC opponents. Despite the tough task many Mid-South teams offered, Martin was able to play his was to a 9-1 record in singles and doubles during the regular season.

"I am very happy to see Martin end up getting this. He's worked very hard for this and it is good to see him rewarded for all his effort." - head coach Chin Tan

Martin's nod as an All-American is not the only accolade the senior collected this year with him wining the MSC Player of the Week award four times while being named a Mid-South All-Conference first teamer as well. Barbier's efforts were not lost on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association either as the Frenchmen was regularly ranked by the ITA in both singles and doubles. Martin was named to every list the publication released this season with him finding himself as high as 29 in singles and 16 in doubles alongside Banoub.

Mattis Le Montagner makes his first appearance on an All-American list with this honor after sporting a career-best 31-12 record. The native of France had his best campaign to date during the 2021-22 season with him setting a new career-high in doubles wins with 14 while being one off his career mark in singles, winning 17 predominantly as the Patriot's #2. Le Montagner ended up being a major reason for UC's nine-match win steak down the stretch of the season with him claiming victories in singles play in every match during that span while doing one better personally with a 10-match win streak of his own.

"Mattis has realized he can play up against some of the best at our level and it has made him more dedicated this year" - head coach Chin Tan

Mattis' efforts were not lost on the Mid-South as he ended up going 9-1 in singles play and 8-2 in doubles when faced with MSC opponents. His play within the conference earned him the nod for the conference player of the week award twice during the year while helping him make his second All-MSC team this year with him being named a first teamer along with Barbier. Le Montagner also proved to be a tough out when going against ranked opponents, going 5-3 on the year against teams receiving votes or better while helping the program claim it's first win over a NCAA Division I school in the 7-0 shutout of Austin Peay.

Much like Barbier, Mattis found himself ranked by the ITA on a consistent basis this season for his work in singles play. Le Montagner made his debut on the list at 28 to begin the season after helping the team claim a trio of wins during the MSC Fall Invite. He then checked in at 42 during the second ranking and 49th in the most recent to make for the first time in program history multiple players have made each ITA ranking list during a season.
