Cumberlands Battles No.19 Bears to Secure a 4-3 Victory

Cleveland, GA- The 10th-ranked Patriots opened the season with a 4-3 victory over No. 19 Truett McConnell Thursday afternoon. UC put up a total of four goals against the Bears, who haven't allowed that many since the 2020 season. Junior Jayden Boelter dominated on offense and snagged UC's three of four goals for her third career hat trick.

The Bears scored the first goal of the game in the 37th minute, but UC responded quickly by scoring their first goal one minute later. The Patriots were awarded a free kick on the right side of the field and a well struck ball by Rita Aguye Cots flew towards the back post where Boelter headed it into the goal making the score 1-1.

Shortly after, in the 42', Cumberlands had an additional free kick opportunity following a TMU foul. Alba Lorca booted in the ball after a shot made by Irene Medina Saez that was blocked by the TMU goalkeeper and deflected right to Lorca, putting the Pats up 2-1. In the closing moments of the first half, the Bears sent a shot on frame, but a save by keeper Georgia Martell maintained the Patriots 2-1 lead.

Cumberlands continued to dominate during the second half of the game. In the 55th minute, Selena Barnett put pressure on the Bears defense that forced a turnover deep inside TMU's defensive half. UC took advantage of the pressure as Boelter intercepted the ball, that was intended for goalkeeper, and sailed it into net from just outside the 18-yard box. This was the Pats first goal of the second half and extended the lead to 3-1.

The Bears continued to put up a fight, scoring their second goal in the 63' bring the score to 3-2. Unfazed, the Pats retaliated by scoring their fourth goal during the 69th minute. Once again, high pressure from UC forced the Bears into another turnover that found the boot of Boelter, who took two touches before burying the ball into the back of the net.

During the remaining minutes, both teams aggressively fought to secure the win. The Bears were able to score one additional goal in the 87' but it wasn't enough to take down the Patriots. Two game-winning saves from goalkeeper Laura Vogt secured the team's first victory this season over a nationally ranked opponent by a score of 4-3.

This is the sixth consecutive season opener that the Patriots have won dating back to the 2017 season.  It also marks Boelter's first hat trick since she netted three goals in the 6-0 win over Shawnee State on October 15, 2021.

The Patriots are back in action next Tuesday, Aug. 23 against #7 Marian University. The game will kick off at 1:30PM.
