UC Falls to (RV) Grace in Close Contest, 1-0

Winona Lake, IN – After controlling possession and leading offensively for most of the match, the Patriots found themselves on the losing end of a 0-1 loss to (RV) Grace College. Cumberlands is now 0-1-1 to start the season, despite having outshot their opponents 28-15 over the two games.

As a team, UC had 17 shots with seven being on frame. Hrannar Magnusson had the most shots at four, with two on goal, followed by Shuma Sasaki, Storm Hollensted and Rodgrio Riveros all with a trio of shots.

Ingmar Struck had to make five saves in the game, and the only goal he allowed was from a penalty kick, keeping him at zero goals against from the run of play this season.

The Patriots got out to a fast start offensively, recording two shots before Grace recorded one in the opening 15 minutes. Both Stephen Appiah and Hollensted fired off shots, but they were each blocked. One of UC's best chances to score came in the 18' from Magnusson. Rodrigo Riveros had the ball just before midfield. He saw Magnusson running on ahead and chipped the ball to him. Magnusson dribbled the ball to the 18-yard box, drawing the keeper out. He tried to place the ball in the left side netting, but it curved too much and hit the left goal post to keep the score at 0-0.

In the 19h minute of play, the Lancers had three shots, two that were saved by Struck and one that was blocked by the defense. Both of Struck's saves were from point blank range, but he was up to the task each time keeping GC off the score sheet.

The second half was also dominated by the Patriots, recording nine shots to Grace's four. One of Cumberlands' shots in the final 45 minutes that looked like it was headed across the goal line was from Riveros in the 73rd minute. He won the ball just outside the 18-yard box, took a touch and fired the shot to the lower right corner with some pace. However, Grace's goalkeeper outstretched to push it away from the goal.

With the score still notched at 0-0 in the 82', Struck made an impressive save to keep the Lancers off the board. The attacker had worked their way into the 18-yard box, Struck was covering the near post when the shot was fired to the far post. Struck lept, stretching out his right arm to disallow the goal.

Grace found their lone goal in the 87th minute after they awarded a penalty kick just inside the 18-yard box from a tripping foul. The Lancer attacker studder stepped to the penalty spot and placed it in the right corner pocket to make the score 1-0 with just minutes to play. Cumberlands was unable to find the equalizer, earning their first defeat of the season.

UC will be back in action in just two days time, traveling to #21 Bethel (IN). The game is set to kick off at 2PM ET on Saturday, August 27 in Winona Lake, IN.
