Berea, Ky – The women's cross country team dominated the competition in their first meet of the season, with
Ashlyn Liddle taking first place overall,
Emily Bird placing second, and the team coming out victorious for the second year in a row.
Ashlyn Liddle started off her career as a Patriot with a bang as she was the first runner to cross the finish line Friday evening. The junior transfer paced an 11:37.38 two-mile time to take home the win.
Emily Bird sprinted down the homestretch with her teammate as she finished just one second after Liddle for second place. The duo's three total points led the way for the Patriots first place team finish.
Victoria Shedron continued the success of Patriot newcomers on the day with a fifth-place finish of her own. The grad-transfer ran a 12:07.59 for this top-five finish.
Lauren Sanderson was the fourth Patriot to cross the finish line, placing eighth overall, an improvement upon her 11
th-place finish a season ago. The sophomore finished her race in 12:17.92.
Kate Golden was the final Patriot scorer in Berea, placing tenth overall with a time of 12:20. The freshman brought the team's score to 26 points for a dominant win over the seven teams that raced.
Ashley Terry competed for a 15
th place finish, also an improvement from her performance a year ago with a 12:34.51 two-mile time. A trio of Patriots finished soon after Terry with
Ella Henage,
Nevaeh Warren, and
Chloe West placing 17
th, 18
th, and 19
th. Henage paced a 12:36.04 while Warren and West finished in 12:37.32 and 12:42.79, respectfully.
Morgan Lucason paced a 12:54.11 for 22
nd while
Abriella Overholser finished 32
nd with a time of 13:10.57.
Carolyn Connelly (13:35.96),
Hannah Henage (13:36.47),
Jenna Grogan (14:12.46),
Isabelle Blatz (17:43.46) rounded out the Patriot runners on Friday.
UC's 26 points earned them a first place finish over second-place Centre College who scored 39 points. Georgetown placed third with 111 points while Asbury and Transylvania scored 114 and 137 points for fourth and fifth respectively.
"The women did an amazing job opening the year and knocking down the door for the season opener. We were able to see where we are and now we can go from here," said Head Coach
Bradley Sowder about his team's performance to start the season.
The Patriots will return to the course in two weeks as they travel to Tallahassee, FL for the NAIA Pre-Nationals Meet.
