Cumberlands Ties Bethel 1-1 After Last Second Goal From Carola Fontan

McKenzie, TN- Despite the #4 Patriots dominating the game with possession and offensive chances, the second conference game of the season ended in a 1-1 tie against the (RV) Bethel Wildcats Saturday night. This is the team's third tie of the season and keeps UC with an undefeated record of 6-0-3 and 1-0-1 in conference play.

Bethel started the game by putting a lot of offensive pressure on the UC defense. 15 minutes into the first period, the Wildcats found the back of the UC net for a 1-0 lead. Despite going down early, the Patriots controlled most of the offensive chances, outshooting the Wildcats 14 to 7, with nine shots on goal compared to Bethel, who had four.

Georgia Martell played a complete game, racking up a total of three saves. The Brisbane, Australia native has been a key piece of the Patriot defense, as she has recorded 22 saves already this season.

Cumberlands had a well-balanced offensive presence as eight different players made goal attempts. Rita Aguye Cots and Jayden Boelter tied the most shot attempts with three, each of which had two shots on goal. The goal attempt that came in clutch for the Patriots ended-up coming off the boot of Carola Fontan.

With just four minutes left in the game, Fontan was able to find the back of the Wildcat goal. A long pass from Amalia Wichmann at the midfield point was snagged by Irene Medina, who crossed the ball to Fontan from three feet outside of the goal. Fontan dodged a Wildcat defender to tap the ball into the back net for the only Partriot goal, tying the game, 1-1.

With so little time remaining, neither team was able to bring in the golden goal. The second conference game of the season ended in a 1-1 tie keeping both teams undefeated in MSC play.

The Patriots will be back in action for another conference match-up on September 28 when they face Georgetown College in Williamsburg, KY at the UC Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 4:30 PM and the live stream can be viewed here.
