Cumberlands Fell Short In Matchup Against Thomas More

Williamsburg, KY – Cumberlands fought hard but fell short this afternoon against Thomas More 3-0 (23-25, 19-25, 28-30). The Patriots drop to 12-5 on the season.  

The Pats were led offensively by Allyson Grava who notched 14 kills along with two blocks. Danielle Jackson added six kills with two blocks, and Shelby Lackey notched five kills. Lexi Lester came away with two aces while Juliet Banks and Kira Ervin would put in one apiece. In the passing attack, Kendall Arnold led the way with 28 assists and Savanah Schwarz added three. Defensively, three players tallied double-digit digs. Banks led the way with 16, Lester added 12, and Ervin came away with 11. At the net, Emily Prewitt came away with four blocks.  

The Patriots started off hot with a 6-1 run to open the first set. Jackson opened the game with a kill, Lester followed with an ace. Grava would go on and tally three straight kills. Later in the set, the Saints rallied back to take the lead 20-19.  From there, UC would get a kill from Ervin, a block by Prewitt, and a kill by Anna Blumeier to tie the set at 22-22. Following a point by each team, the Saints would score another two points to take the set 25-23.

Thomas More kept the momentum from the first set into the second set and took that set as well. In set three, UC fought hard and kept it close throughout the set. With the score 20-20, the Patriots would rattle off three straight points to take the lead 23-20. Those three points came from a Arnold kill, an ace from Ervin, and a kill by Jackson. After a Saints timeout, they would tie the game back up at 23-23. Following a Saints kill, Blumeier notched a kill to tie the set, and then and block by Arnold and Jackson would give UC the lead.  From there scoring went back and forth until Thomas More score three straight points to take the set and the match.

Cumberlands next matchup will be a road game against Lindsey Wilson on Tuesday September 27th at 8 pm. Then they will close out the month of September with an away game against Campbellsville on the 30th at 7 pm.
