Anna Blumeier and
Allyson Grava both tally 20 plus kills as the Patriots fell short in a five setter against Lindsey Wilson (18-25, 28-26, 29-27, 15-25, 12-15). The Pats are now 12-6 on the season.
The Pats were led offensively by Blumeier and Grava. Blumeier had a very efficient game as she put in 22 kills with a .553 attacking percentage. Grava was right behind her with 21 kills and nine digs.
Shelby Lackey also put in a double digit kills total with 10 kills, with four blocks.
Kendall Arnold notched a double-double with 45 assists and 14 digs, while also adding three aces.
Emily Prewitt led the team in blocks with eight, while
Juliet Banks led the team in digs with 25 digs.
Cumberlands had strong starts from both Grava and Blumeier as they both tallied four kills apiece in the first set but fell short in the end 18-25. In the second set, UC had to make a comeback to take the set. When the score was 13-10, Blumeier notched back-to-back kills to cut the lead down to one. A few plays later, Grava got back-to-back kills to take the lead 16-15. After some back-and-forth action, Cumberlands would get a late lead 27-26 after Grava put in two more kills. Following a Blue Raiders timeout, Grava would continue her hot streak with a kill to win the set 28-26.
The third set started in LWC favor as they jumped out to a 11-4 lead. The Pats responded with a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 11-10. During that run, both Lackey and Blumeier had two kills each, along with two Blue Raiders errors. After a four-point LWC rally, UC would sting together another 6-0 run to gain the 16-15 lead. During that run Prewitt and Lackey came together at the net for back-to-back blocks, while Arnold put in two aces. Lackey also had a kill on that run. Following a Blue Raider point and error, Prewitt and Grava would notch a block. After a late rally by LWC to take a 21-19 lead, UC would call a timeout. Following the timeout,
Danielle Jackson and Prewitt would get a block. Then Jackson tallied two kills to keep UC within one point. After a Lindsey Wilson point, Blumeier came through with two kills to tie the set at 24-24. After another timeout Blumeier notched another kill to take a 26-25 lead. A few plays later, Prewitt would get back-to-back kills, then Grava ended to set with another kill.
The Blue Raiders rallied to take set four to force a fifth set. In the fifth set, UC opened hot scoring the first two points. Blumeier notched a kill to open the set, then a few plays later Lackey notched a kill of her own. On the next play, Prewitt and Grava came together at the net for a block. LWC would go on a 4-0 run to force a Cumberlands timeout. After the timeout, Grava notched two kills to cut the lead down to one, 7-6. A few plays later, Blumeier added another two kills to her tally, to make it a 9-10 game. LWC would go on a late run to take the set and the match.
Cumberlands will end the month of September with an away game against Campbellsville on the 30
th at 7 pm.
