Portsmouth, OH – Brittni Allison notched a career-high 13 points and three assists, while
Victory Fredricks recorded her second career double-double as the #24 Patriots women's basketball team defeated Shawnee State 91-82 Thursday night at Waller Gym. Cumberlands had six players, including four starters in double-figures as they earned their seventh consecutive win to improve to 15-3 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
Allison went a perfect 5-5 from the field, including 3-3 from behind the arc, while Fredricks grabbed 15 rebounds to go along with 10 points and three blocks.
Kassie Monday led the way for UC with 16 points, four assists, and four rebounds as
Kaylie Monday chipped in 10 points, six assists, and four steals in the win.
Channing Lewis added 13 points, while
Lakin Burke finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Destiny Haworth has now grabbed seven rebounds in consecutive games as she tallied six points as well.
Patriots took the early lead as
Victory Fredricks grabs a pair of defensive boards while
Channing Lewis and
Destiny Haworth combined for five points putting UC in front a minute into the quarter. Fredricks added a jumper before finding
Brittni Allison for a three-pointer extending the lead to 10-2 with 7:13 remaining. Allison continued to anchor the Patriots offense with her second triple, before finding Fredrick in the post extending the lead to 15-2 midway through the quarter. Cumberlands added three-pointers from Haworth and Steele before
Lakin Burke laid one in to make 23-8 with 3:17 left. Shawnee State closed out the quarter on a 6-4 run, however, the Patriots take a 27-14 edge into the second period.
Kassie Monday opened the second quarter with an offensive board and put back to extend the lead to 15 points. Shawnee State went on an 10-2 run, before
Kaedlee Potter finds
Kaylie Monday for a layup to make it 33-24 with 6:12 remaining. The Bears utilized an 12-2 run to take their first lead, before Steele hit a jumper to put UC back in front 37-36 with 3:39 left.
Casey Coleman converted consecutive buckets for the Patriots to put UC in front 41-40 with 2:32 left.
Lakin Burke added four points while Cumberlands hit four from the charity stripe to take a 49-47 into the break.
The two teams traded points in the opening minute of the third quarter before
Kaylie Monday stole the ball and found
Kassie Monday for layup putting UC in front 53-51 with 7:37 left.
Kaylie Monday added four of UC's next six points and dished out an assist to
Channing Lewis as the Patriots take a 61-58 lead with 4:29 remaining. That sparked an 7-0 run, including five points from Allison to give her a new career-high, to make it 68-58 with 3:14 remaining. Cumberlands closes out the quarter on a 7-6 run to take a 75-64 advantage.
The teams continue to trade baskets to open the fourth quarter as Allison finds Burke and then Monday for five straight points to give UC an 82-71 advantage. Shawnee State cut the lead to five points before
Kassie Monday drained a pull-up jumper to make it 84-77 midway through the fourth quarter. The Bears pulled within three points before the Patriots defense stepped up and took consecutive charges, before
Kassie Monday drained five free throws as
Channing Lewis added a pair for the 91-82 final.
Cumberlands seven game win streak is the longest since the start of the 2020-21 season. The Patriots out-rebounded Shawnee State 44-34 and dished out 15 assists to the Bears 10.
UC will return to the court Saturday, January 14, when they return home to face (RV) Pikeville. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. with live video available
