Monday and Potter Notch Career-High against Bears

Williamsburg, KY – Kassie Monday notched her first career double-double, while Kaedlee Potter scored a career-high ten points, however, it wasn't enough as the Patriots fell to (RV) Pikeville 72-70 Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court.  Cumberlands moves to 15-4 overall and 9-4 in conference play. 

Monday dished out a career-high 10 assists to go along with 10 points and six rebounds for her first collegiate double-double.  Potter went 5-5 from the field for a new career-high to go along with a pair of rebounds.  Lakin Burke added nine points and seven rebounds, while Vicory Fredricks notched six points and six rebounds.  Cumberlands closed out the game with 11 players scoring at least four points.

Pikeville jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Brittni Allison drained a shot from long range to even the score at 4-4 with 6:54 remaining.  Destiny Haworth added four straight points before finding Burke in the post to put UC in front 10-8 midway through the first quarter.  UC closed out the first quarter converting six from the charity stripe to take a 16-14 edge.

The two teams continued to play even in the second quarter with Cumberlands getting back-to-back buckets from Potter to jump in front 22-18.  UPike cut the lead to a point twice, before Whitney Caldwell and Casey Coleman converted six free throws to make it 30-25 with 4:43 left.  Pikeville evened the score at 30-30 however Coleman grabbed an offensive board and found Potter for a layup to put Cumberlands in front with 2:18 left in the first half. UC closed out the half with a three-point play from Jaiden Cox and a layup from Coleman to take a 39-36 lead at the break.

UC opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run, including four points from Fredricks to make it 47-37 with 5:48 left.  The Bears responded with six straight before Monday found Burke in transition to extend the lead to 49-43 with 2:50 remaining.  Monday added assists to Allison and Cox, however Pikeville netted eight unanswered to tie the game 53-53 heading into the four quarter.

Burke notched four points in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to put the Patriots back in front.  The lead changed five times over the next four minutes until Monday connected with Potter for a layup to even the core at 63-63 with 4:33 left. A minute later Haworth drained a three-pointer before finding Monday for a transition layup to give UC a 68-65 lead with 3:27 left.  Pikeville scored seven unanswered points to retake the lead as Monday found Potter for a layup cutting it 72-70 with a minute left.  The Patriots had three looks but couldn't get them to fall for the 72-70 final.

Cumberlands will return to the court Thursday, January 19, as they travel to Wilberforce, OH to face the Bulldogs.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. with live stats available here.
