Henderson, TN – Kaylie Monday scored 14 of her game-high 24 points in the second quarter as the Patriots outscored (RV) Freed-Hardeman 27-9 in the period en route to a 78-59 win Saturday afternoon at the Brewer Sports Center. With the win, UC improves to 18-5 on the season, including a 12-5 mark against the MSC.
Monday went 5-9 from the field, including hitting a career-high 11-11 from the charity stripe for 24 points. She also tallied five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, which was her 125
th steal of her career.
Destiny Haworth chipped in 13 points, while
Kassie Monday and
Lakin Burke chipped in 12 points apiece.
Channing Lewis and Burke combined for 13 rebounds and five blocks.
Freed-Hardeman jumped out to an 8-2 lead over the first four minutes of play. The Patriots started to rally as
Casey Coleman stole a pass before Haworth connected with Burke for a bucket before
Whitney Caldwell sank a pair of free throws to cut it to 8-6 with 4:37 remaining. The Lions went on a 9-4 run, before Haworth netted seven straight points to even the score at 17-17 with 34 seconds left. KJ White hit a three-pointer to five Freed-Hardeman and 20-17 lead after the first period.
Cumberlands opened the second quarter on a 6-1 run, that say layups from Bruke, Lewis, and
Kaylie Monday putting the Patriots in front 23-21 two minutes in. The two teams traded points over the next three minutes before
Kaylie Monday drained back-to-back three and
Kassie Monday added a three-point play to extend UC's lead to 38-27 with 3:12 remaining.
Kaylie Monday and
Kassie Monday closed out the half combining for six more points as Cumberlands took a 44-29 lead at the break.
The two teams traded baskets to open the second half before Burke and Haworth scored four straight pushing the lead to 51-32. Freed-Hardeman went on an 11-4 run, spanning five minutes to cut the lead to 55-43. UC closed out the quarter hitting five free throws, including three from
Kassie Monday as the Patriots took a 60-48 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Haworth and Lewis added three straight points in the final quarter to give Cumberlands a 63-48 edge with 7:54 remaining. The Lions scored five unanswered to pull within ten, before
Kaylie Monday converted a three-point play, which sparked a 10-0 run with all the points coming from
Kaylie Monday and
Amerah Steele. The Patriots closed out the game with five straight points from
Jaiden Cox and
Mackenzie Babb for the 78-59 final.
Cumberlands converted a season-best 25-28 from the charity stripe in the game, which was the most made free throws since January 29, 2022 when they made 26 against Georgetown. UC also outrebounded Freed-Hardeman 36-28, while finishing with nine steals.
The Patriots will return to the floor Saturday, February 4, when they return home to host Georgetown. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. with live video available
