Patriots Earn 11th Sweep of the Season

Henderson, TN – The Patriots volleyball team utilized a balanced attack to defeat Freed-Hardeman 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-14) for their 11th sweep of the season Friday night. With the win, UC improves to 18-9 overall and 6-2 in conference matches. 

Allyson Grava led the way with 11 kills, while Anna Blumeier tied her season-high with nine kills.  Sara Zampedri tallied nine kills and seven digs, while Kendall Arnold tallied 31 assists and six digs.  Juliet Banks recorded a team-high 14 digs as Savanah Jolly and Jada McAvene combined for seven aces.

The two teams traded points to open the match until a kill from Grava put the Patriots in front 3-2.  Grava and Zampedri each added a kill to extend the lead to 7-4 a couple points later.  A couple points later, Cumberlands went on a three-point run capped off by a Zampedri ace to give UC a 13-6 advantage.  Kendall Arnold added a block and a kill as part of a five-point Patriots run extending the lead to 21-9.  UC closed out the set with a kill from Blumeier to take the first set 25-14 and the 1-0 lead.

After trading points to open the second set, the Patriots went on an 11-2 run, with a pair of kills from Anna Blumeier to take a 12-3 lead.  Danielle Jackson and Zampedri combined for three straight kills to extend UC's lead to 15-4.  Blumeier tallied a pair of kills as part of a four-point run, before the junior notched a kill to close out the set as UC extended their lead to 2-0 after taking the set 2-0.

The third set was even at 3-3, however, Cumberlands tallied five straight points capped off with a kill from Tylie Depue to take an 8-3 edge.  A Danielle Jackson kill sparked a 6-0 run, including three aces from Jada McAvene to give the Patriots a 15-5 advantage.  UC added a three-point run to extend their lead to 18-6.  After Freed-Hardeman went on an 8-5 run, Jackson and Savanah Jolly notched back-to-back kills to close out the set 25-14 for the 3-0 sweep.

The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, October 21st, when they travel to McKenzie, TN to face Bethel.  First serve is set for 3 p.m.
