Channing Lewis tallied UC's first triple-double in more than a decade as the 13
th-ranked Patriots defeated Midway 98-72 Tuesday afternoon at the Patriots Classic. With the win, Cumberlands improves to 7-0 on the season, while the Eagles move to 2-4 overall.
Lewis recorded 11 points to go along with 13 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists to led the way for the Patriots.
Kassie Monday netted a team-high 16 points to go along with four assists and four rebounds, while
Kaylie Monday and
Lakin Burke notched 13 points apiece.
Destiny Haworth chipped in 11 points, as
Amerah Steele finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
The teams traded baskets early as the game was even at 8-8, before UC went on a 6-0 run with four points from
Kassie Monday to take a 14-8 lead midway through the quarter. A minute later,
Kaylie Monday laid in a bucket before
Kassie Monday notched the steal and found
Kaylie Monday for a second layup in a six second span. Lewis added four points, while Steele closed out the quarter with a 10-foot jumper to give the Patriots a 31-21 advantage.
Steele opened the second quarter with four points, a steal and an assists, before
Joy Kendrick found Burke in the post extending the lead to 39-24 with 8:29 remaining. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes until
Kaylie Monday hit back-to-back from behind the arc to make it 50-34 with 2:48 left. Midway went on a 7-5 run to close out the half, however, the Patriots took the 55-41 edge into the break.
Lewis connected with Haworth for a three-pointer to open the third quarter. A couple minutes later Steele connected with
Brittni Allison for three making it 66-47 midway through the quarter. UC went on an 11-0 run that featured a pair of assists for Lewis and a three-pointer from Haworth to extend the lead to 77-47 with 1:45 remaining. In the closing seconds of the quarter, Kendrick connected with
Victory Fredricks for a bucket to give the Patriots a 79-49 edge.
Midway opened the fourth quarter with nine unanswered points, before
Kassie Monday drained a three to make it 83-58 with 5:40 left.
Amy Thompson added a three-pointer off an assist from Lewis and a minute later, Lewis grabbed the rebound and ran the transition finding Kendrick cutting to the rim for a layup for her tenth assist of the game to complete the triple double. Cox netted Cumberlands final eight points of the game, including 2-2 from deep, for the 98-72 final.
UC will return to the court Tuesday, November 28, as they travel north to face Saint Mary of the Woods College. It'll be the first meeting between these two school and tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
