Patriots Utilize Fourth Quarter Run to Earn Seventh Straight Road Win

Columbia, KY – The 20th-ranked UC women's basketball team closed out the game on 26-3 run, spanning nine minutes, to defeat Lindsey Wilson 76-57 Thursday night at the Biggers Sports Complex.  The win is Cumberlands seventh straight road victory, marking it their longest road win streak since the 2011-12 season.  Overall, the Patriots improve to 22-5 and 16-5 in conference play.

Kassie Monday led the way for Cumberlands with 20 points, nine assists, and five rebounds, while Amerah Steele chipped in 18 points.  Kaylie Monday and Lakin Burke finished with nine points a piece as Monday also added five rebounds and three assists.  Burke grabbed a career-high nine rebounds as Channing Lewis tallied eight points and seven rebounds. 

The Patriots get on the board first as Kassie Monday converted a pair of layups to give Cumberlands the early 4-0 advantage.  Lindsey Wilson scored five unanswered points before Kaylie Monday found Lakin Burke for a bucket to put UC in front 6-5 with 5:31 remaining.  Lindsey Wilson outscored Cumberlands 10-8 over the next four minutes as Kassie Monday connected with Kaylie Monday for the transition layup to pull UC within a point at 15-14.  The two teams traded baskets before Destiny Haworth drained a three-pointer, while Lakin Burke added a layup to cut the deficit to 22-20 after the opening quarter.

Kassie Monday opened the second quarter with a pair of jumpers before finding Laking Burke for a three-point play to put Cumberlands in front 27-24 with 8:11 remaining.  After a Blue Raiders basket, Kaylie Monday for Joy Kendrick for a jumper, to make it 29-26 midway through the period.  Lindsey Wilson scored 13 unanswered points to take a 39-29 lead, before Amerah Steele sank a 15 foot jumper.  Burke found Steele in the corner on the next offensive possession to cut the deficit to 39-34 with 2:33 remaining.  Kaylie Monday sank a pair from the charity stripe as Lindsey Wilson took a 41-36 lead into the break.

UC started to rally in the third quarter with three straight baskets from Kassie Monday and Steele to pull within a point at 43-42, three minutes in.  The two teams traded baskets as Steele hit a jumper to make it 49-48 with 2:11 remaining in the third.  Lewis added a couple of free throws to even the score at 50-50, however, the Blue Raiders took a 52-50 lead into the fourth quarter.

After Lindsey Wilson extended their lead to four, Cumberlands went on a 9-0 run including six points form Kassie Monday to take a 59-54 advantage with 7:08 left. Kaylie Monday found Steele for a layup before draining a three-pointer of her own to extend their lead to 66-57 midway through the fourth.  The Patriots continue to apply the defensive pressure as the UC players each score a pair of points making it 72-57 with 3:33 left.  Lewis and Kendrick each added baskets in the closing minutes for the 76-57 final.

The Patriots will return home Saturday, February 18, when they host third-ranked Campbellsville.  Prior to the game, UC will honor Channing Lewis as their lone senior.  Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. with live video available here.
