Williamsburg, KY – Dawson Coltran netted a season-high four goals, including sparking a seven goal second quarter effort as the fourth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team doubled up (RV) Ottawa 14-7 Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. The win improves the Patriots to 6-0 on the season as they extend their program best six game win streak to open a season.
Coltran finished with four goals and an assist in the win, while
Christian Vanover and
Nick Kava tallied three goals and an assist each.
Will Rogers and
Maalek Wilson also finished with four points apiece, while
Tanner Popovich chipped in a goal and two assists.
Gabe Schwaiger made three caused turnovers and scooped five ground balls as
Schylar Chapman,
Taylor Long and
Tate Crowell each finished with multiple ground balls in the game.
Michael Toohey remains undefeated between the pipes as he made ten saves.
Nik Kubik went 13-22 on faceoffs with six ground balls.
Ottawa scored on their first possession of the game to take the early advantage. The Patriots responded as Vanover found Rogers cutting towards the cage for a goal to even the score at 1-1. Cumberlands outshot the Braves 16-8 in the opening quarter but struggled to connect with the back of the net as Ottawa took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
In the opening minute of the second quarter, Coltran scooped the ground ball off an Ottawa failed cleared and fired it into the upper corner of the cage to tie the game at 2-2. Cumberlands won the next two faceoffs as Vanover and Rogers each added a goal to make it 4-2 with 13:04 remaining in the first half. Four minutes later, Toohey made a great save and on the transition Popovich found Vanover for a goal to give UC a 5-2 advantage. The two teams traded goals before Kava found Popovich for a goal and added one his own making it 8-4 at the break.
The third quarter began similar to the second as Cumberlands netted three goals in three minutes with Wilson tallying a goal and an assist on that run to extend the lead to 11-4. Toohey made four of his ten saves in the third quarter to keep the Braves at-bay while Coltran added an unassisted goal giving the Patriots a 12-6 lead heading into the four quarter.
Ottawa pulled within five at 12-7 early into the fourth quarter. The score stayed that way until the 7:41 mark when Crowell forced a turnover and Wilson found Coltran for a goal. UC added another goal 37 seconds later as Coltran connected with Vanover to make it 14-7 with 7:04 remaining. Toohey made a save in the closing minute of the game for the 14-7 final.
Cumberlands set a new program record with 65 shots in the game, surpassing the previous record of 62 set back in 2016 against Davis & Elkins. UC also scooped 40 ground balls to the Braves 25 in the win.
UC return the field Tuesday, March 14, when they travel to Fort Wayne, IN to face #2 Indiana Tech. The game is set for a 5 p.m. start with live video available
