Toohey Tallies Career-High for Saves as Patriots Fall in Overtime

Williamsburg, KY – Dom Lulow netted the equalizer with 27.4 seconds remaining in regulation, while goalie Michael Toohey made a career-high 19 saves, however, it wasn't enough as the fourth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team fell to third-ranked Reinhardt 12-11 in overtime Saturday afternoon at UC Lacrosse Complex.  With the win the Eagles improve to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while the Patriots moved to 7-2 and 2-1 in AAC.

Toohey made 12 saves in the second half, including seven in the fourth quarter to earn a surpass his previous career-high of 17 set back on April 24, 2021.  The 19 saves are also the third most in program history for a single game.  Owen Hebenstreit notched a team-high three caused turnovers, while Nik Kubik went 13-24 on faceoffs with four ground balls.  Jacob Bush also scooped four ground balls.

Offensively, UC was led by Nick Kava and Maalek Wilson, who both finished with hattricks.  Will Rogers notched a team-high four points, while Christian Vanover dished out a season-high three assists.  Lulow chipped in three points as Tanner Popovich added a pair of points in the game.

Reinhardt struck first with a goal two minutes into the first quarter.  Cumberlands responded as Vanover found Kava for a goal to even the score at 1-1.  Kubik won the next faceoff and on the ensuing possession Rogers found Taylor Long sitting in front of the cage for his second goal of the season and giving UC a 2-1 edge.  The Eagles scored twice to retake the lead before Toohey stopped a JR Sess shot and initiated a clear, which resulted in Lulow find Wilson cutting for a goal to even the score at 3-3.  Reinhardt added a goal late to take the 4-3 lead after the opening period.

The Eagles extend their lead to 5-3 early in the second quarter before Popovich found Wilson, who put a well-placed shot into the cage to make it 5-4.  The two teams traded goals, before the Patriots took advantage of a Reinhardt penalty as Vanover connected with Kava, who fired a shot just under the crossbar to even the game at 6-6.  Toohey added a pair of saves to keep the game tied at the break.

Toohey made four saves in the first six minutes of the third quarter, however, Cameron Cochran was able to fire a putback to give Reinhardt a 7-6 advantage.  Chrystian Coleman sparked a Patriots run by forcing a turnover and at the other end of the field Rogers connected with Wilson for his second hattrick of the season.  Cumberlands won the next faceoff and Kava dodged towards the cage and put a well-placed shot to make it 8-7 in favor of UC just seconds later.  Reinhardt evened the score before Vanover forced a turnover, Noah Brandt scooped the ground ball and found Popovich for the go-ahead goal as UC took a 9-8 lead into the fourth quarter.

Reinhardt scored three times, over a two-minute span, to open the fourth quarter and take an 11-9 lead with 9:19 remaining.  Toohey made three saves to keep the deficit at two before Rogers found a crease for a goal to bring UC within a goal with 4:00 minutes remaining.  The Patriots defense forced a turnover to retain possession with 1:36 remaining.  UC fired a pair of shots before Rogers sent a cross field pass to Lulow, who netted the one-time to even the score with 27.4 seconds remaining.  Reinhardt had a final chance, however, Toohey was there for the save to send the game into overtime.

Reinhardt won the opening faceoff overtime and on that possession Cochran scored the game-winning goal with 3:14 remaining for the 12-11 final.

The Patriots will return to the field Thursday, when they travel to West Palm Beach to face the top-ranked Seahawks of Keiser.  The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. with live video available here.
