Pair of Four Goal Performances Anchor Patriots to 17-8 Win over Bulldogs

Williamsburg, KY – Dawson Coltran and Nick Kava netted four goals apiece combined with a seven goal second quarter gave the sixth-ranked Cumberlands men's lacrosse team a 17-8 win over (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan Tuesday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  The win improves the Patriots to 9-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Bulldogs move to 6-6 and 3-4 against the AAC.

Coltran netted four goals in a game for the third time this season and it marked the second time in his career that the senior recorded consecutive four-goal games.  Kava tied his career-high with four goals, while Tanner Popovich notched five points.  Christian Vanover notched a hat trick and dished out an assist in the win. 

Michael Toohey made 12 saves between the pipes to earn his ninth win of the season.  Gabe Schwaiger tallied six caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Schylar Chapman made three caused turnovers and four ground balls.  Chrystian Coleman scooped a team-high seven ground balls.

Tennessee Wesleyan struck first with a goal however two minutes later Chapman scooped a ground ball and on the ensuing possession Coltran fired a shot into the cage to even the score.  In the transition after a Toohey save, Coleman connected with Popovich for a goal to put UC in front.  Vanover netted two of the Patriots next three goals to extend Cumberlands lead to 5-1 with 3:56 remaining.  Tennessee Wesleyan added a goal to cut the lead to 5-2 before UC looked to extend their lead in the closing seconds of the first quarter as Popovich put a shot on frame however it was saved.

UC made quick work to extend their lead to open the second quarter as Popovich dished out an assist to Kava before netting an unassisted goal to make it 7-2 three minutes into the period.  Just over a minute later, Schwaiger notched a caused turnover and on the transition Maalek Wilson put a well-placed shot past the keeper.  After the two teams traded goals, Popovich found Noah Brandt cutting towards the cage for his first goal of the season to make it 10-3 midway through the quarter.  Cumberlands added two more goals including a man-up goal from Vanover to take 12-3 lead.

The Bulldogs tallied three unanswered goals to open the third quarter and cut the lead to 12-6.  Both defensive picked up their intensity as Toohey made five his 12 saves in the quarter. The two teams traded goals and in the closing seconds of the period, Popovich found Rogers for a goal as time expired in the period to make it 14-7 in favor of UC.

Coltran capped off Cumberlands first possession of the fourth quarter with his fourth goal of the game.  The score remained that way until the 7:07 mark when Vanover scooped a ground ball and made a cross field pass to Kava, who bounced a shot into the goal.  Kava added his fourth goal a couple minutes later, while Toohey added one more save for the 17-8 final.
