Williamsburg, KY – The sixth-ranked Patriots men's lacrosse senior class recorded 11 goals, nine assists, 11 ground balls, and five caused turnovers in the UC's 24-6 win over St. Andrews in their regular season finale Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, Cumberlands earns their tenth win of the season, marking the third time in program history that they tallied double-digit wins and finishes with a 5-3 record in AAC play.
Tanner Popovich recorded a career-high five assists and nine points to go along with scooping five ground balls.
Christian Vanover tied his season-high with five goals and added an assists, while
Dawson Coltran chipped in four points.
Chrystian Coleman tallied his first career hat trick finishing with four points and five ground balls.
Dom Lulow and
Will Rogers each added four points.
Jacob Bush led the Patriots defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Michael Adams went 14-26 on the faceoff while scooping four ground balls.
Michael Toohey and
Nathan Foskey combined for eight saves in the win.
UC struck first taking advantage of a Knights penalty as Lulow connected with Coltran, who fired a shot just under the crossbar to make it 1-0. St. Andrews responded with two straight goals, before
Schylar Chapman found Popovich in transition for the equalizer with 6:09 left. Vanover added two goals in a 15 second to give UC a 4-2 lead with 3:37 remaining. Cumberlands tallied four caused turnovers over the final couple minutes of the quarter and took the 4-2 lead into the second quarter.
After a quick turnover to open the second quarter Coleman nets a man-down transition goal to extend Cumberlands lead to 5-2. The two teams traded possession for the next couple of minutes as Toohey recorded a save before Lulow found Popovich for a man-up goal at the 6:40 mark. Just over a minute later, the Patriots added another transition goal this time off the stick of
Gabe Schwaiger, who netted his first goal of the season. Vanover add a pair of goals in the closing minutes to give UC a 9-2 lead the break.
Cumberlands came out of the break netting 11 goals in the third quarter, which marks the fifth time in program history and the first time this season, that UC has scored at least 11 goals in a period. On their first possession of the period Popovich found
Nick Kava in front of the cage and Kava fired a behind the back shot into the back of the net to make it 10-2. After that duo connected once again, Rogers and Popovich combined to tally the next five goals extend the lead to 16-2 with 8:49 remaining. UC added four unanswered goals, including a pair from Coleman to make it 20-2 after three quarters.
St. Andrews netted two straight goals to open the fourth quarter before Vanover found his brother Jonathon Vanover, who put a well-placed shot into the cage. The two teams trade goals twice as Foskey made a trio of saves for the 24-6 final.
The Patriots earned the fourth-seed in the AAC Tournament and will play fifth-seed Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m.
