Williamsburg, KY- The 11
th ranked Patriots notch the series sweep over Wilberforce after winning both games in today's doubleheader. UC took the first game 15-3, then run-ruled the second game 12-2 to advance to 29-5 on the year.
Game One
Garrett DeClue got his seventh win of the season as he pitched 6.0 innings, scattering five hits for two runs. He came away with 12 strikeouts which is a new career high.
Tyler Shafer came into close and pitched 1.0 innings giving up one hit for one run with a strikeout to end the game.
Charlie Muniz continued his hot week as he went 3-3 with a homer and four RBIs.
Caden Petrey also had a good game going 2-2 with a homerun and four RBIs. Â
Josh Simon went 3-4 and added two RBIs, while
Evan St Claire and
Max Harper added extra-base hits.
After a scoreless first inning, UC got their bats going and scored six runs in the second. With one out, St Claire got walked, and
Ryan Shavers got hit by a pitch. Simon followed with an RBI single to take the 1-0 lead. After both base runners advanced on a wild pitch, an RBI single from Petrey gave UC the 2-0 lead.
Josiah Santiago got hit by a pitch to fill the bases, and two batters later, Muniz extended the lead to 6-0 with a grand slam homer down the left-field line.
In the bottom of the third, the Pats added four more runs to their lead. Harper led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. Both St Claire and Shavers got walked to fill the bases. Then Simon notched an RBI for the 7-0 lead. Petrey would follow with a three-run shot to left center for the 10-0 lead.
Later in the fifth inning,
Raphy Almanzar reached on an error, Muniz followed with a single, and Harper got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Then St Claire stepped in the box and hit a grand slam for the 14-0 lead. Two batters later, Simon singled down the left field line, and Petrey got walked to follow. Santiago would notch an RBI single to extend the lead to 15-0. The Bulldogs were able to score three runs before UC ended the game to win the series.
Game Two
UC got the run rule to take the series while notching five extra-base hits. Harper led the way going 5-5 with two home runs and a double for seven RBIs. Both Simon and
Sujel Arias went 2-3, with Arias getting a homer and two RBIs. Almanzar also added a homerun as well. On the mound,
Jake Kmiecik got the win after pitching 5.0 innings. He only allowed four hits, two runs, only one was earned, and seven strikeouts.
Caleb Plummer came in relief and pitched 2.0 innings, not allowing a hit or run with one strikeout. Plummer also had a three-pitch inning.
Wilberforce got on the board first with a run in the first, and UC responded in their at-bat to tie the game. With one out, Muniz notched a single, and Arias got walked. Muniz would score on an RBI single from Harper to tie the game at 1-1.
 After a scoreless second inning, the Bulldogs regained the lead before Cumberlands scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead. With two outs, the Pats got back-to-back homers from Arias and Harper. Next, St Claire singled up the middle and stole second a few pitches later. St Claire would score on an RBI single from
Ben Snapp.
Then in the fourth inning, UC extended their lead with five runs. Petrey led off the inning by getting walked. Almanzar followed with a home run over the center field fence for the 6-2 lead. Muniz would then get a single down the left field line, and Arias got walked. Harper would then come to the plate and hit his second homerun of the game for the 9-2 lead.
Later in the seventh inning, UC only needed three runs to get the run-rule victory. Petrey got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Muniz notched a single, and both runners would advance on a wild pitch. Then an RBI single from Arias gave UC the 10-2 lead. With runners on the corners, Harper got the walk-off two RBI double to left center to win the game at 12-2 to complete the sweep.
Cumberlands will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 4
th, with a game against Union at 4 pm before taking on #2 ranked Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 5
th, at 4 pm.
