Williamsburg, KY- The seventh-ranked Patriots had a big weekend as they swept the series against Pikeville to claim the regular season title. The Pats claimed game one 7-1 and won game two 5-2. Cumberlands now sit at 40-6 on the season and 22-5 in conference play.
Game One 7-1
Knicko Billings got the start and the win as he pitched UC's first complete game of the season. He pitched 7.0 innings, scattering one run over three hits, with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Josh Simon continued his hot hitting at the plate, going 3-3 with two RBIs. He is on an eight-game hit streak.
Sujel Arias went 1-2, with his lone hit being a two-run homer.
Caden Petrey went 1-3 with three RBIs, while
Evan St Claire and
Josiah Santiago stole a base.
Pikeville got on the board first with a run in the top of the second, and UC answered with a two-run inning. St Claire reached on an error and stole second a few pitches later to lead off the inning.
Ben Snapp got walked, and Simon followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game. Two batters later, Petrey got an RBI on a fielder's choice to take the 2-1 lead.
In the third, the Pats scored two more runs to take the 4-1 lead.
Charlie Muniz led off with a single through the left side. Arias followed with a two-run homer to left field for the 4-1 lead.
Later in the sixth, UC added three more runs to their lead.
Max Harper got walked to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Snapp reached on a fielder's choice, and Harper advanced to third on an error. Simon stepped to the plate and notched an RBI single to right field for the 5-1 lead. Santiago came into run and stole second a few pitches later. A few plays later, Petrey notched a two-RBI single up the middle for the 7-1 lead. UC would hang on to win the game and the series.
Game Two 5-3
In game two,
Garrett DeClue picked up his 10
th win of the season as he pitched 6.0 innings, only allowing four hits for two runs with nine strikeouts.
Cesar Avila came in to get his eighth save of the season. He pitched 3.0 innings allowing three hits on runs with four strikeouts. Muniz led the way, going 2-5 with a double and a home run. Snapp notched a triple, while St. Claire added a double.
UC took the lead in the bottom of the first, as Muniz hit a solo home run to left field and the 1-0 lead. Muniz's homerun tied the single-season homerun record at 102 for the season.
The Bears tied the game in the second and took the 2-1 lead in the third. The Pats answered with a run in the third to tie the game.
Raphy Almanzar led off with a single to left center. A few pitches later, Almanzar advanced to second on an error. Two batters later, Harper notched an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 2-2.
Later in the fourth, Cumberlands regained the lead. Snapp led off with a triple down the right-field line. He would score on an RBI single from Simon for the 3-2 lead.
UC would get another run across to extend their lead to 4-2. Arias reached on an error and went to second. Arias would score on an RBI single from Harper.
Then in the eighth, Cumberlands added one more insurance run for the 5-2 lead. With two outs, Muniz doubled to right center. Courtesy runner
Kevin Perez would advance to third on a wild pitch, and a few pitches later, he scored on an RBI single from Arias.
Cumberlands held on to win and sweep the Bears to take home the MSC regular season title. UC has not lost an MSC series this season. The Pats will travel to Alice Llyod on Tuesday for a tune-up game before hosting the MSC Opening Round next weekend.
