Williamsburg, KY – The sixth-ranked Patriots men's lacrosse team had five players record at least three goals on the day as UC defeated Montreat 22-8 Wednesday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, Cumberlands improves to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Will Rogers led the way for UC with a career-high five goals and seven points in the game.
Tanner Popovich (3g, 2a) and
Maalek Wilson (4g, 1a) each added five points, while
Christian Vanover tallied three goals and an assist.
Dawson Coltran netted four goals, including earning his 100
th career points.
Gabe Schwaiger and
Owen Hebenstreit led the way defensive with three caused turnover a piece, while the duo scooped six ground balls as well. UC had a trio of players, including
William Haggard and
Chrystian Coleman add a pair of caused turnovers, while Coleman scooped a team-high eight ground balls.
Michael Toohey and
Nathan Foskey split time between the pipes and combined for 10 saves in the win.
The Patriots struck first as Coleman forced a turnover before Wilson connected with Coltran for a goal three minutes into the game. After Montreat evened the score, Rogers forced a turnover as Popovich scooped the ground ball and put a shot into the cage from 35 yards out to make it 2-1 in favor of UC. Cumberlands added three unanswered goals capped off by one from Vanover to take a 5-1 advantage after the first period.
Coleman scooped the opening ground ball of the second quarter and connected with Vanover for a goal 21 seconds in. Popovich and Rogers quickly extended the lead to 8-1 in favor of UC midway through the quarter. Montreat netted two of the next three goals, however, in the closing minute of the half Wilson took the ball at midfield and raced towards the cage for a goal to give the Patriots a 10-3 advantage.
Rogers opened the third quarter connected with Wilson for a goal before adding an unassisted goal to make it 12-3 with 12:44 remaining. After the teams traded goals twice, Johnathan Vanover found Coltran for his third goal of the game as Vanover dished out his second assist making it 15-5. UC dominated the possession over the final six minutes of the quarter and put in three goals to make it 18-5.
The Patriots opened the fourth quarter with
Noah Brandt finding a cutting Coleman for a goal. Two minutes later, Coltran recorded his 100
th career point as he converted a man-up goal to make it 20-5 with 12:35 remaining. Montreat scored three of the final five goals, however UC's
DJ Smith netted his first collegiate goal with 7:53 remaining for the 22-8 final.
Cumberlands returns to the field Tuesday, April 11, when they host (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
