Bowling Green, KY- The seventh-ranked Patriots start the Bowling Green trip with a 5-1 victory over Pikeville.
Garrett DeClue had a career day on the mound as he picked up his 11
th win of the season. UC moves to 43-7.
DeClue got the start and pitched 7.0 innings, only allowing one run on one hit with four walks and a new career-high 14 strikeouts.
Cesar Avila came into close and pitched 2.0 innings, not allowing a hit or run, with three walks and three strikeouts.
Ryan Shavers led the way going 2-2 at the plate, while
Evan St Claire went 3-4 with two stolen bases and an RBI. Both
Charlie Muniz and
Josh Simon added RBI doubles.
The Pats took an early 2-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first.
Raphy Almanzar reached on an error to lead off the inning. Muniz then stepped to the plate and hit an RBI double to right center for the 1-0 lead. Three batters later, St Claire made it 2-0 with an RBI single through the right side.
The Bears cut the lead in half after scoring a run in the second. After a few scoreless innings, the Pats scored three runs in the sixth for the 5-1 lead.
Max Harper, the reigning MSC Player of the Year, led off with a double to left field. St Claire followed with a single to put runners on the corners. He would steal second a few pitches later. With two runners in scoring position, Simon notched a two-RBI double to left center to take a 4-1 lead. Shavers then came away with a single to put runners on the corners.
Caden Petrey got an RBI from a fielder's choice for the 5-1 lead.
UC would hold Pikeville scoreless the rest of the game to claim the win. The Patriots now await the loser of the Freed-Hardeman and Thomas More game.
