Williamsburg, KY – The sprints dominated with four of UC's six first-place finishes, as Cumberlands came away with a runner-up finish in the 2023 MSC Outdoor Championships Monday night at James H. Taylor II Stadium. The Patriots tallied 214.50 points over the two day meet.
Monday began with the 5K racewalk, which
Carson Johnson dominated once again. He earned his third straight gold medal in the racewalk with a 22:57.28 finish.
Christopher Greer also battled for a sixth-place finish to score three points for UC. He would cross the finish in 37:51.32.
The very next race saw another first-place performance out of the Pats. The 4x100 relays squad of
Kerrington Eubanks,
Elyon Bando,
Ryan Long, and
Deiron White clocked a 41.02 to finish almost half a second faster than the next finisher.
This group also took up four of the final eight places in the 200m dash. Eubanks fired off the blocks in route to his second gold medal of the day, finishing in 21.57. Bando, Long, and White finished third through fifth with times of 21.83, 22.09, and 22.29 respectively.
Bando dominated the 100m competition, hitting an NAIA B standard time of 10.55 to earn the top seed in the finals. The sophomore would clock a 10.68 for the gold on Monday. Eubanks followed right behind his teammate for second-place in 10.74 while
Ryan Long finished fourth in 10.93.
UC's final first-place finish on the track came from
Leonardo Daley in the 110m hurdles. The senior won the conference yet again with an A standard time of 14.54.
Andy Tchyombo also found himself on the podium after this race, earning a bronze medal with a 15.11 finish.
Christian Dingus and
Nathan Howard also qualified for finals, finishing sixth and seventh with times of 15.59 and 15.66
The pole vault was all Cumberlands, as they swept the top-three finishes.
Tristan Petrey won his second MSC title of 2023 with a 4.85m clearance.
Logan Lambo cleared a height of 4.10m for second while
Alex Lockhart earned the bronze behind a 3.95m mark.
Kade Slusser rounded out the Pats in this event with a fifth place mark of 3.65m.
Tchyombo came away with his second podium performance of the day in the 400m hurdles. He clocked a 55.78 for second overall.
Matthew Yeary and Dingus joined their teammate in the top-five after they tied for fifth in 57.70.
UC's 4x800 and 4x400 finished runner-up this weekend. The 800 squad of
Ludovico Vaccari,
Lonnell Johnson,
Andrew Barker, and
Deshawn Crowe took off in the 800m relay, combining for a 7:43.32 finish. The 4x400 team of White, L. Johnson, Dingus, and Crowe paced a 3:19.68 for their silver medal as well.
Crowe, Johnson, and Barker also scored in the 800m on Monday. Deshawn's 1:53.34 gave him a third-place finish, and was just 0.34 seconds from a standard. Johnson clocked a 1:56.78 for sixth while Barker finished his two laps in 1:56.96 for eighth.
Vaccari led all Patriot finishers in the 1500m run. The freshman crossed the finish line in 3:59.64. Crowe finished two spots behind him in 4:00.83 while
Noah McClellan came in eighth with a 4:01.07 time. Vaccari and McClellan also scored in the 5K the same day. They finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth with times of 15:25.20 and 15:41.02.
Kyle Woodward also placed in the top-eighth this race behind a 15:46.01 outing.
Woodward put together a great race in the 10K on Sunday night. The junior clocked a 32:22.25 for second place.
James Overholser finished fourth in the longest race of the meet. He paced a 33:06.51 time.
Cumberlands earned ten points from four competitors in the decathlon. The quartet finished fifth through eighth led by
Mason Smith. Slusser and
Troy Grubb took sixth and seventh with Petrey rounding out all scorers.
Five Patriots scored in throwing events over the weekend.
Heath Rexroat placed eighth in both the hammer throw and javelin with marks of 41.92m and 38.58m.
Aaron Coffey placed two spots ahead of his teammate in the hammer behind a 43.85m toss on his second attempt.
The shot put also saw two Patriots take sixth and eighth place.
James Crawford had a 14.21m throw with
Logan White following him up with a 13.74m toss of his own.
Xavier Ramsey represented the Pats in the discus, placing seventh with a 42.03m throw.
The final patriot scorer of the meet was
Colby Bales in the high jump. The freshman cleared a height of 1.90m on his first attempt to give his team two points.
Cumberlands finished the weekend with 214.50 team points. Cumberland U scored 225.50 for first-place overall while Lindsey Wilson finished third with 169.50.
