Lima, OH – After falling behind early, the Patriots fought a hard and evenly matched game that resulted in a 1-1 tie against (RV) Vanguard, Thursday afternoon. Cumberlands is now 0-1-1 to start the season, despite having outshot their opponents 20-18 over the first two games of the season.
Altogether, UC had nine shots with three being on frame.
Salvador Martinez had the most shots with two, one on goal, which resulted in the Pats lone score of the afternoon.
Antonis Seraphides followed with two shots, one on goal, rounded out by
Shuma Sasaki with two shots.
The Lions opened the scoring in the 8
th minute of play. Pats quickly worked with a blocked shot form Sasaki and
Karl-Emil Andersen and a shot on goal from
Jesus Macaya, howver still trailed 1-0.
The 31' featured a pass across the box from Macaya which was headed by
Salvador Martinez for the Patriots lone goal of the game. Martinez recorded his first goal of the 2023 season and of his career.
The second half held the 1-1 tie with only one shot on frame by UC. Lone opportunities came from corner kicks from Sasaki, which resulted in a shot from Seraphides.
UC will be back in action just two days time, traveling to face Baker University. The game is set to kick off at 1:30 PM ET on Saturday, August 26 in Lima, OH.
