Marion, IN – The fourth-ranked Patriots women's soccer team utilized a three goal first half to knock off #14 Indiana Wesleyan 3-1 Friday night. It was Cumberlands first road win of the season as UC improves to 4-0 on the year.
A trio of Patriots scored in the win as
Sarah Hammerstone,
Nicole Araújo, and
Judit Moya each netted their first goal of the season.
Olaya Blanco dished out her third assist on the year, while
Jayden Boelter and
Abigail Little each earned their first assist of the season. George Martell made a season-high seven saves in the win to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Indiana Wesleyan came out looking to strike early with three shots in the first five minutes of play, however, Martell made a save to keep the game scoreless. Both teams continued to battle over the next ten minutes as
Kallen Fuller recorded UC's first shot, which sailed wide of frame. In the 16' minute the Patriots pushed the ball forward to set up a corner kick.
Olaya Blanco sent a lower corner kick into the box, the ball bounced around before Hammerstone put it into the net to give UC the 1-0 lead. The goal was Hammerstone's first goal since March 21, 2021, when she scored against Georgetown.
Cumberlands continued to pick up their pressure on the offensive end and a couple minutes later,
Jayden Boelter pushed the ball forward and centered it for Nicole Ajauro for the goal to extend the lead to 2-0. UC added two more shots before,
Abigail Little made a run into the box and found
Judit Moya, who put a well-placed shot just inside the far post for her first collegiate goal to extend the lead to 3-0 at the 38:01 mark. The Patriots added three more shots to close out the first half with a 10-3 shot advantage and the 3-0 lead.
The second half opened with both teams putting a shot on frame in the first five minutes of play, however, both goalies made the stop to keep the score 3-0. Martell added two saves before grabbing the ball out of the air on an Indiana Wesleyan cornerkick to hold the Wildcats off the board. Minutes later, Indiana Wesleyan converted a penalty kick to cut the lead to 3-1 in the 60'. The two teams traded possession over the rest of the way as both teams had a couple of chances but couldn't convert as Cumberlands held on the 3-1 final.
UC finished with a 14-12 edge on shots and a 5-3 advantage on cornerkicks in the game.
The Patriots will return home on Monday, September 4
th, when they host 25
th-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. with live video available
