Patriots Open Conference Play Victorious

Georgetown, KY – The Cumberlands volleyball team opened Mid-South play with a 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22) win over Georgetown Tuesday night at Davis-Reed Gym.  With the win UC improves to 11-6 overall on the year and extends their win streak to five straight matches.

Sara Zampedri led the way for UC with 18 kills and 14 digs, while Allyson Grava notched 12 kills and 14 digs for a double-double.  Juliet Banks recorded a team-high 24 digs as Kendall Arnold finished with 40 assists and three aces.  Savanah Jolly also chipped in three aces and eight digs in the match.

Georgetown opened the game with a 4-3 advantage before Sara Zampedri notch a kill off an assist from Kendall Arnold to tie the match.  Savanah Jolly recorded ace before the Tigers took an 15-11 advantage.  Zampedri recorded a pair of kills as part of a UC rally to cut the deficit to 16-14.  A couple plays later, Allyson Grava notched a block to tie the match at 18-18.  Grava added a kill two plays later to put UC in front 20-19.  Arnold tallied assists to Kara Gipson and Zampedri to give the Patriots a 22-20 edge.  The Patriots added a pair of kills before Zampedri tallied a block to close out the set 25-22 to give Cumberlands a 1-0 lead.

Georgetown opened the second set on a 7-2 lead, however Grava and Gipson combined for a block to start a Patriot rally.  Arnold notched a pair of aces as part of a five-point run to even the score at 7-7.  The Tigers scored six unanswered points before Grava notched a kill to spark a three-point rally cutting the deficit to 13-10.  Georgetown extended their lead to 18-11 a couple points later, however, UC continued to battle with four straight points include an ace from Jolly to pull within three points.  After a long rally, which included multiple digs from Juliet Banks, Zampedri notched a kill off the assist from Danielle Jackson to cut the deficit to 18-16.  That was the closest UC came as Georgetown pulled away to take the set 25-17 and even the score at 1-1.

Grava opened the third set with a kill, before Georgetown took four of the next five points to take the early 4-2 lead.  The two teams traded points until a Gipson kill sparked a four-point Patriots run evening the score at 9-9.  The matched was tied twice more before the Cumberlands went on a 5-2 run, capped off with a kill from Zampedri to take a 16-13 advantage.  After the Tigers pulled within a point Rylie Depue and Gibson partnered on a block, while Zampedri notched a kill to give UC a 22-18 edge.  The Patriots tallied the final three points of the set capped off by an ace from Jolly to take the set 25-19 and the 2-1 lead.

The Patriots utilized a kill from Gipson to take a 4-2 advantage in the fourth set.  Georgetown went on a 5-1 run before Zampedri notched a kill and an ace to tie the match at 7-7.  The two teams traded points as a three-point UC run gave UC a 15-14 edge.  Georgetown utilized a five-point run to take a 19-15 lead, however kills from Zampedri, Grava, Jackson, and Gipson sparked a 6-2 UC run to even the score at 21-21.  Arnold then connected with Grava for her tenth kill of the match to put Cumberlands in front.  Grava added two more kills, including the match clincher as Cumberlands won the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

Cumberlands returns the court Tuesday, September 19, when they travel to Campbellsville, KY to face the Tigers.  First serve is set for 7 p.m.
