Patriots Tame Bears Behind Balanced Scoring Effort

Portsmouth, OH –Jayden Boelter and Carola Fontan both record a brace as the third-ranked UC women's soccer team defeated Shawnee State 6-2 Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Patriots head into conference play with a 6-0-2 record on the year.

Four Patriots tallied goals in the game led by a pair of goals from both Boelter and Fontan.  Olaya Blanco and Anabel Luedecke each added a goal in the game as Cumberlands outshot Shawnee State 16-3 in the contest.

The Patriots came out firing with two shots on frame in the first five minutes of action, however, the Bears keeper made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless.  Two minutes later, Cumberlands would capitalize as Carola Fontan put a well-placed shot into the back of the net, giving the Patriots the 1-0 lead.  It is the third consecutive game that the sophomore has netted a goal.  UC took advantage of a Bears foul in the box as Jayden Boelter stepped up and converted a penalty kick to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 11'.  UC added a pair of shots, however, Shawnee State cut the lead to 2-1 in the 18'.  Both teams traded possession over the next twenty minutes until Blanco scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-1 in favor of the Pats.  UC took that advantage into the second half.

The Bears scored off a corner kick early into the second half to cut the lead to 3-2.  UC looked to extend their lead notching five shots over the next 20 minutes.  In the 72' the Patriots earned a corner kick and Blanco sent a high ball into the box, where Boelter finished for her first brace of the year.  The Patriots need just 14 seconds before Fontan made a great play for her second goal of the day to extend the lead to 5-2 in the 72'.  UC capped off the day with Anabel Luedecke scoring a goal for the second straight game for the 6-2 final.

Cumberlands will return to the pitched Saturday, September 23, when they host (RV) Campbellsville for their conference opener.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
