Williamsburg, KY – The #15 UC women's basketball team utilized a 24-point third quarter to pull away and take down ninth-ranked Georgetown 79-62 Saturday afternoon at Randy Vernon Court. With the win the Patriots 13-5 and 1-1 in conference, while Georgetown moved to 16-2 and 1-1 against the MSC.
Kassie Monday notched a season-high 24 points and seven rebounds to go along with seven assists.
Destiny Haworth went 5-8 from the field to finish with 19 points while
Kaylie Monday tallied 10 points, nine rebounds, and a pair of steals.
Lakin Burke grabbed a career-high seven offensive rebounds, while she notched two blocks and six points.
Cumberlands opened the game with four straight points with buckets from
Kaylie Monday and
Joy Kendrick.
Kassie Monday added four of UC's next six points to put the Patriots up 10-3 with 6:47 remaining. UC continued to work their offense going on a 9-4 run with four points from
Kaylie Monday to extend their advantage to 19-10. Georgetown closed out the first quarter on a 10-4 run of their own cutting the lead to 23-20.
Destiny Haworth opened things up in the second quarter sinking a pair of free throws as she went 6-6 from the charity stripe on the day. UC extended their lead to 28-22 before the Tigers netted nine unanswered points, over a four minute run. Joy Kenrick converted a layup to spark a 6-2 run, that was capped off by Kendrick connected with
Casey Coleman for a jumper to put UC in front 35-33 at the break.
UC converted 61.5% from the field, including a trio of three-pointers in the third quarter. Burke grabbed an offensive rebound and putback to open up the period. Georgetown tallied six straight before
Kassie Monday drove in a laid it up to put Cumberlands in front 40-39 with 7:36 left. Haworth netted eight straight points for the Patriots before
Channing Lewis connected with
Victory Fredricks for a layup to make it 52-44 at the 2:35 mark. Haworth hit her third from behind the arc as the Patriots took a 59-44 edge into the fourth quarter.
Haworth carried that momentum into the fourth quarter scoring six straight points to extend their lead to 65-48 just over a minute in.
Kassie Monday added five of the Patriots next seven points to give UC a 72-51 advantage midway through the period. The Tigers went on a 9-2 run, however, Cumberlands sank five from the charity stripe to close out the game for the 79-62 final.
Cumberlands out-rebounded Georgetown 39-27, with 17 offensive boards, while they also held a 17-10edge on assists in the game.
The Patriots return to the court Thursday, January 18, when they host Cumberland. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. with live video available
