Cooper and Bernabe Garner First-Place Finish at Tornado Open

Bristol, TN – The UC women's wrestling team competed in the Tornado Open, hosted by King University. The Patriots had an outstanding showing, placing four in the top-six of their respective weight classes with two individual champions and competing against numerous NCAA competitors.  

Claiming the individual titles for UC was Chamira Cooper and MaQuoia Bernabe. Angelina Casteneda and Destiny Marquez collected top-six finishes in their respective weight classes.
 
In the 170-wieght class, Cooper collected a first-place finish after dominating her opponents throughout the day en route to a 2-0 record. In her first match, Cooper received a bye. In her second bout, she took her opponent down with a fall in 1:15. Cooper concluded the day with a fall in 2:02 in the championship match, taking first-place.

In the 191-weight class, Bernabe started her day with a 10-0 tech fall in her first bout. In her second match of the day, she collected a fall in 0:30 followed by a fall in 3:35 during her third bout of the day. In the championship match, Bernabe collected first-place after her opponent sustained an injury, finishing the day with a record of 4-0.

Also representing UC in the 191-weight class was Marquez who earned a top-six finish after recording a record of 2-2 on the day. In her first two matches of the day, Marquez recorded two victories by decision, 7-1 then 8-4. In her third bout of the day, she was sent to the other side of the bracket and concluded her day on the mat.

In the 101-weight class, Casteneda earned a top-six finish after recording a record of 3-2 on the day. In her first bout of the day, she recorded an 11-1 tech fall. In her second match of the day, Casteneda was sent to the other side of the bracket where she had to fight her way through tough opponents. In her third bout, she recorded a 10-0 tech fall to move on and face her own teammate, Alex Uribe. Casteneda collected a 10-0 tech fall against Uribe to conclude her day on the mat.
 
The Patriots will return to the mats on Wednesday, January 17 to host Life University for the MSC home opener. The match is set to take place inside the UC Volleyball Gym in Williamsburg, KY at 6:00 p.m. EST.
