Wichita, KS – The Cumberlands women's wrestling team record 116.5 points to finish third at the 2025 NAIA National Championship, which marks the program best finish since it became a National Championship sport. The Patriots had six NAIA All-Americans, including a national runner-up.
Katie Gomez earned a national runner-up finish in the 124-bout. Gomez opened the day with an 8-2 decision over third-seed Joanna Vanderwood. Vanderwood scored the first two-points of the match, while Gomez rallied with back-to-back two point takedowns to take a 4-2 lead into the second period. Gomez added four points in the second period to advance to the championship match. Against top-ranked Cristelle Rodriguez of Doane, Gomez jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period. Both wrestlers tallied a two-point takedown, however Rodriguez scored three straight points to close the match. Despite being tied 5-5, Gomez finished as the National Runner-Up on criteria.
Shammilka Miranda,
Micah Fisher,
MaQuoia Bernabe,
Angelina Castaneda, and
Alivia Ming all garnered NAIA All-American honors.
In the 117-bout, Miranda won all three of her matches on Saturday to recorded a third-place finish. She opened the day with a fall against Icart Galumette of Campbellsville. Miranda jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first period and added a two-point takedown into a fall to advance. The junior followed that up by knocking off second-seed Camille Fournier of Texas Wesleyan at the 2:42 mark and to advance to the third place match. Against sixth-ranked Mayangelie Colon of Grand View, Miranda utilize a pair of 4-point takedowns en route to an 11-0 tech fall.
Fisher notched a fourth-place finish in the 160-bout after going 3-1 on the day. Fisher opened the day with a first period fall over eight-seed Aspen Barber of Doane. In that match the junior tallied a pair of takedowns before earning the fall at the 2:34 mark. Fisher followed that up by advancing to third-place match after defeating sixth-seed Allyssa Johnson of Jamestown. She was leading 9-2 before advancing on injury before earning a fourth place finish.
Bernabe opened the day with sixth-seed Alysse Phillips of Lourdes and earned a 3-0 decision to advance. Barnabe earned one point in the first period and added a two-point takedown in the second period to secure the win. After falling to top-ranked Olivia Brown (Grand View), Bernabe knocked off second-seed Kathryn Hingano of Southern Oregon in a 3-1 decision to garner fifth place.
Casteneda opened the day knocking off fourth-seed Karina Vang of Doane in a 10-0 tech fall. In that match Casteneda scored all 10 points in the first period. The San Bernardino, CA native closed out the championships in sixth place.
Freshman
Alivia Ming recorded a seventh-place finish in the 145-bout. After dropping her first match of the day, Ming won the eighth-place match over sixth-seed Anastasia Hardin (Missouri Baptist) by disqualification to secure seventh-place.
Life captured the 2025 NAIA National Championship with 190.5 points, while Grand View was second with 120.5 points.
