#10 UC Men's Soccer Rally Late for 2-2 MSC Draw Against #14 Phoenix

Williamsburg, KY – After trailing by two goals early in the match, the No. 10 Cumberlands Patriots tack two goals early in the second half to record a 2-2 draw against the No. 14 Cumberland Phoenix. This is their second draw of the season and their first draw in Mid-South Conference play, seeing the Pats at an 8-1-2 overall record and 1-1-1 MSC record.

Collectively, UC tallied 19 shots with six being on frame. Salvador Martinez led the way with one goal, six shots and two on frame. Rodrigo Riveros followed with one goal, two shots and one on frame. Mario Fernandez Garcia notched four shots with one on frame while Fabio Galeano Bazan tacked two shots with one on frame.

The Patriots were on the offensive third of the field right out of the gates, seeing Martinez mark the first shot on frame in the fourth minute of play. A trio of corner kicks off the boot of Emil Skursch saw Fernandez Garcia mark his first shot of the match, just wide, followed by a blocked header from Bruno Garcia.

In the '14, the Phoenix quickly worked on their offensive third to take an early 1-0 lead over the Pats. In a quick attempt to even the match, Fernandez Garcia records a shot on goal but was unable to neutralize the threat.

Through the remainder of the first half, UC took three more shots with two of them being on frame but was unable to score their first goal of the game. The Phoenix, however, added to their lead with their second goal with 16 second remaining in the half. UC went into the half trailing the Phoenix, 2-0.

At the start of the second half, it took the Pats less than six minutes to net their first goal. In the 50th minute, a pass across the box from Martinez set Riveros up to cut the deficit to 2-1. With no hesitation, Martinez gets his own goal on the afternoon in the '54 with a shot thirty yards out.

With the score tied at 2-2, the Patriots fought hard and gruesomely through the remainder of the second half. UC recorded eight shots in the second half but was unable to add to their lead. Strong defensive efforts led UC to hold the Phoenix scoreless and to two shots in the second half, walking away with the 2-2 draw against the Phoenix.

Cumberlands returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 23, with a Mid-South Conference road match against the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders. The match is set for 8:00 p.m. in Columbia, KY.
