Three Patriots in Double Figures as #7 Patriots Open the Season Victorious

Williamsburg, KY – The seventh-ranked Patriots women's basketball team surpassed the century mark as 13 UC players scored in the 101-55 win over Simmons, Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court.  Cumberlands has now won seven consecutive season openers.

Lakin Burke led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Kaylie Monday chipped in 20 points, four steals and three rebounds. With the four steals, Monday moves into second all-time for career steals with 263.  Kassie Monday tallied 13 points and nine assists.  Kassie surpasses Lissi Fuller for second place on the career assist list.  Joy Kendrick and Kylie Fultz combined for 15 points and nine rebounds.

The Patriots opened the game with 11 unanswered points as Kaylie Monday netted four points, while Victory Fredricks added an assists and layup. The two teams traded points until Kassie Monday connected with Jaiden Cox for a three-pointer to extend UC's lead to 18-8.  UC went on an eight-point run that was capped up by a LeeAnna McNulty layup giving the Patriots a 26-8 lead.  Simmons closed out the quarter on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 29-18 after the first quarter.

Kassie Monday hit an eight-foot jumper to open the second quarter, while both defense picked up the pressure in the opening minutes of the period. Kaylie Monday added five straight Patriots points before Kassie Monday connected with Lakin Burke for a layup making it 39-23 with 5:44 remaining.  The teams traded points from the charity stripe before a Kaylie Monday steal led to a Burke layup putting UC in front by 17 points.  Cumberlands closed out the half on an 8-2 run to take a 52-29 lead.

Cumberlands opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run as Kassie Monday dished out a trio of assists extending the lead to 60-31.  Monday added five straight points before UC sank four consecutive free throws before Cox forced a steal and found McNulty in transition for the layup making it 71-38 with 2:07 remaining.  The Falcons closed out the period on a 4-3 run, however Cumberlands took a 74-42 lead into the fourth.

UC opened the fourth quarter with Payton Acey draining a three-pointer before finding Kendrick for three pushing the lead back to 37 points.  Simmons went on a 7-4 run before Amy Thompson completed a putback to spark an 8-0 run with four points each from Thompson and Ava Schureman.  Cumberlands closed out the game with layups from Brittni Allison and Payton Acey for the 101-55 final.

It the first time that UC has clipped the century mark in a season opener since 2005 when they defeated Knoxville College 106-39.

The Patriots return to the court on Monday, October 28, when they host Bryan.  It is a rematch from the second round of the NAIA Tournament last season and tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
