Williamsburg, KY – The seventh-ranked Patriots women's basketball team had four players in double figures as Cumberlands defeated Bryan 80-60 Monday night on Randy Vernon Court. With the win, UC improves to 2-0, while the Lions move to 1-1 on the year.
Kaylie Monday led the way with 21 points, 10 rebound, and five assists for the first double-double of the season for Cumberlands.
Kassie Monday added 17 points, seven assists, and two steals.
Lakin Burke and
Joy Kendrick tallied 13 points and three steals each, while Burke also grabbed nine rebounds.
Kassie Monday opened the game with back-to-back three's to spark an 11-0 Patriot run. The teams traded buckets until
Kassie Monday connected with
Kaylie Monday for a three-pointer extending the lead to 18-11 midway through the quarter. A
LeeAnna McNulty layup was sandwich in between a pair of
Kaylie Monday three's as part of an 8-0 run giving Cumberlands the 26-13 lead.
Kassie Monday and Kendrick scored the final four points of the period extending UC's advantage to 30-13.
Payton Acey connected with
Kylie Fultz for layup to open the second quarter, before Bryan netted six unanswered points to cut the lead to 32-19.
Kassie Monday hit a three before connecting with McNulty for a jumper pushing the lead back to 18 points, 37-19. After a Lions run, Cumberlands closed out the half with eight straight points, including a buzzer-beater by
Kaylie Monday to put the Patriots up 46-27.
Bryan opened the third quarter on a 9-1 run, before Burke and
Kaylie Monday combined for five straight points to make it 52-36 with 4:37 remaining. Burke netted four of UC's next six points as three different Patriots players earned assists pushing the lead to 58-38. The Lions scored the final three points of the quarter as Cumberlands took a 58-41 lead into the fourth period.
Kaylie Monday connected with Kendrick for a three-pointer as the junior scored the Patriots first five points of period making it 63-43. Burke added four points as the two teams traded baskets over the next four minutes of play. Cumberlands sank four straight from the charity stripe before
Ava Schureman connected with
Jaiden Cox for a three-pointer pushing the lead to 78-55.
Emily Naranjo sank a pair of free throws for her first collegiate points as UC earned the 80-60 final.
The Patriots went 18-21 (85.7%) from the charity stripe tonight, while hitting 55.6% from behind-the-arc.
UC returns to the court Thursday, October 31
st, when they face Miami Hamilton as part of the Patriots Classic. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
