Araujo’s Career-High Five Points Leads to Tenth Win of the Season for Patriots

Williamsburg, KY – The top-ranked UC women's soccer team utilized a four goal first half to defeat #18 Georgia Gwinnett 5-0 Monday night at the UC Soccer Complex. The win is Cumberlands tenth win of the season for the seventh straight year UC has reach double-digit win totals.

Nicole Araujo led the way with a brace and an assist for her first career multi-goal game and a career-high five points.  Jayden Boelter, Laura Bosca, and Carola Fontan tallied a goal and an assist a piece. Georgia Martell and Hedvig Persson combined for three saves for UC's sixth shutout of the season.

Cumberlands controlled the possession early into the match pushing the ball up field.  Just over three minutes into the game Laura Bosca brought the ball up the right flank before passing to Carola Fontan, who sent a lob across the box.  Jayden Boelter made a run to head it back for Nicole Araujo to finish putting UC in front 1-0.  The Patriots continued to apply pressure forcing a Georgia Gwinnett turnover and on the ensuing possession Fontan sent the ball forward to Bosca, who took one dribble before crossing the ball into the box, where Araujo finished for her first multi-goal game of the season and extending the lead to 2-0.  The two teams traded possession over the next few minutes until Alba Ramirez made a run and sent the ball to Boelter, who put a well placed shot into the right side of the goal making it 3-0 in the 12'.

The Patriots continued to play stifling defense while tallying three shots over the next 20 minutes, however, the score remained 3-0.  UC earned a corner kick in the 35', while Olaya Blanco and Noah Paalman each notched a shot, both of which sailed wide.  In the closing minutes of the first half, UC took advantage of a miss played ball as Bosca fired a shot to the left side of the net for her first goal of the season, making it 4-0 at the break.

The Grizzlies came out strong in the second half tallying a pair of shots, one of which deflected off the crossbar as the UC looked to keep them scoreless.  The two teams traded possession for the next ten minutes until Bosca earned a corner kick for the Pats.  It looked like Cumberlands was adding a goal however the play was nullified by an offside.  A minute later, Georgia Martell tallied her first save of the match keeping the score 4-0.  Cumberlands controlled the possession over the next 13 minutes rattling off four shots and three corner kicks.  The Patriots extended their lead in the 82' as Araujo centered a ball for Fontan, who shot deflected off the crossbar before crossing the line for a goal making it 5-0. It's the third straight game that Fontan had netted a goal.  Georgia Gwinnett tallied four shots and saves from Martell and Hedvig Persson, in the closing minutes as UC closed out for the 5-0 final.

Cumberlands returns to the pitch on Friday, October 11, when they travel to Campbellsville, KY to face the #16 Tigers.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
