Patriots Utilize Fast Start to Remain Unbeaten

Williamsburg, KY – Five Patriots finished in double figures in a 101-72 victory over the Grenadiers of Indiana University Southeast on Thursday evening. The Pats forced 20 turnovers, and outscored IUSE 30-5 in points off turnovers.
 
Robertas Jonaitis led UC in scoring with a season-high 19 points and six rebounds while Anthony Johnson added 17 points and three assists. DJ Jones finished the night with 14 points, 7 assists, and five rebounds while Ryan Davidson and Tajahri Cave scored 15 and 10 points respectively.
 
The Patriots took an early lead, going up 11-3 in the first three minutes of the game. Anthony Johnson led the way by scoring 5 of those 11 points. The Patriots continued to increase their lead to 22-10 behind 6 steals, three of which belonging to Matthew Cromer, leading to a three from Jones and baskets from Johnson, Cromer and a pair of Harry Morrice FT's.
 
Through the next several minutes there was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams until the Patriots went on another break away run of 18-12. With 7 minutes left in the first half the Patriots led 40-22,after Davidson added six points and Jones knocked down another triple and a nice pull up jumper. Jonaitis continued to make plays, adding a huge dunk and the final four points of the half. UC finished the half with a 20-point lead, leaving the score at 50-30. Leading the way was Robertas Jonaitis with 13 points on the half and DJ Jones close on his heels at 10 points on the half.
 
After the break, the Grenadiers came out with newfound energy going on a 6-1 run before a huge steal and slam dunk from Tajahri Cave. That dunk shifted the momentum back to Cumberlands putting the score at 57-43 with just over 14 minutes left on the half. The Patriots utilized the shift in momentum to increase the score to 66-50 with 12 and a half minutes remaining. Back-to-back dunks from Johnson and Morrice started the run before Brady Bell knocked down a triple to cap off the run.
 
The Patriots continued to their strong pace going on a 17-8 run putting the score at 83-58 with 7 minutes left. Davidson added seven points int his stretch while Jonaitis and Cave added two points each. Over the next several minutes the Patriots went basket for basket with the Grenadiers bringing the score to 91-69 with 3 minutes left on the game clock. Freshman Jeremiah Godfrey and Kyler McLendon got in on the scoring as Cave found Godfrey in the lane for an easy layup followed by a smooth three from McLendon.  The final horn sounded with the Pats taking the victory 101-72.
 
The Patriots move to 6-0 on the year, and return to the court tomorrow to take on Virginia University of Lynchburg at 11 am in Williamsburg, KY.
