Williamsburg, KY – The ninth-ranked Patriots Men's Soccer team closed out the regular season with their final Mid-South Conference match against the Tigers of Georgetown College. UC collected the 3-1 victory behind the brace from Rodrigo Riveros and a lone goal from Shuma Sasaki, seeing them ended with an overall record of 11-2-1 and 4-2 in MSC play.
Collectively, UC tallied 12 shots with five being on frame. Leading the way for UC, Riveros netted two goals, three shots and two on frame. Sasaki followed with one goal, two shots and one on frame. Salvador Martinez recorded three shots with one on frame while Bruno Marques had one shot with one on frame.
In the first period, Sasaki recorded the first shot of the afternoon with a hall off the crossbar in the second minute of play. A corner kick for the Patriots saw Martinez mark the first shot on frame of the match.
In the '10, a pass up field from Abdulah Adams to Sasaki sets him up for the first goal of the game. Sasaki splits the defenders and barrels the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 Patriot lead early on.
Cumberlands continues to strike on the offensive third of the pitch, seeing Martinez with a shot just right followed by a corner kick from Sasaki. The Tigers look to attack the offensive third, but a four-man wall sees the Patriots mark two consecutive, blocked shots.
Georgetown continued to press up field, but Zachary Dean makes two incredible saves to notch his first two saves of the evening and hold the Tigers scoreless for a 1-0 Patriot lead at the half.
At the start of the second half, less than a minute into play, Shuma Sasaki sends the ball across the box to Riveros for the 2-0 Patriot lead and Riveros' tenth goal of the season.
A foul from Georgetown in the '61 saw Riveros set up for the free kick from 35 yards out. With a booming kick, Riveros nets the goal for a 3-0 Patriot lead.
In the 84th minute, the Tigers pressed up field and managed to score their lone goal of the evening, but UC held strong to record the 3-1 victory over Georgetown.
The Patriots will compete in the Mid-South Conference Tournament starting with the quarterfinals on Thursday. Opponent and time are to be announced.
