Williamsburg, KY – The top-ranked Cumberlands women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 4-0 win over Georgetown to clinch their third consecutive Mid-South Conference regular season title, Monday night at the UC Soccer Complex. The Patriots improve to 15-0 on the year and extend their win streak to 20 straight matches.
Prior to the match, UC honored their four seniors
Rita Aguye,
Olaya Blanco,
Georgia Martell, and
Hedvig Persson.
Carola Fontan and
Lucia Gomez each netted a pair of goals in the match. It marked Fontan's first brace of the season, while Gomez notched her first goal of the season and first multigoal game of her career. Blanco dished out two assists, while
Sarah Hammerstone and
Samantha Sokolove each tallied an assist. Martell and Persson combined for the win, while the Patriots defense held the Tigers without a shot in the match.
Cumberlands dominated the possession from the opening whistle with shots from
Nicole Araujo and Blanco. The Patriots broke through in the 17
th minute as Hammerstone made a run up the left flank before sending a cross into the box, where Fontan was there for the finish putting UC in front 1-0. UC continued to apply the pressure as
Jayden Boelter and Araujo combined for three shots. In the 32', the Patriots played the ball form the back line as Blanco sent the ball forward to Fontan, who lobbed it over the goalie to complete the brace and make it 2-0.
Ten minutes later, Fontan sent a corner kick into the box and
Alba Ramirez's shot deflected off the crossbar. Off that rebound Sokolove tipped it over to Gomez, who finished for her first goal of the season. A few minutes later,
Noah Paalman put a shot on frame, which was saved. In the closing minutes of the first half Blanco sent the ball forward and found Gomez for her second goal of the match extending the lead to 4-0.
UC continued to control the possession as Aguye and
Nia Davies each put a shot on frame in the first five minutes of the second half. Georgetown earned a corner kick in the 58' and were turned away by the Pats defense. Cumberlands tallied six shots and earned one corner kick over the final 30 minutes of play for the 4-0 final.
The 20 match win streak is tied for the ninth longest win streak in NAIA history. The Patriots have also recorded six straight clean sheets.
Cumberlands earned a first round bye in the MSC Tournament and will host the semifinals on November 11
th. The Patriots will face the winner of the four-five matchup at 4 p.m. at the UC Soccer Complex.
