Patriots Utilize Strong Third Quarter to Earn 11th Win

Williamsburg, KY – The seventh-ranked Patriots went on a 12-0 run as part of a 27-10 third quarter to pull away for the 77-65 win over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Friday night on Randy Vernon Court.  With the win, UC improves to 11-1 overall, while the Pomeroys move to 6-5 on the season.

Kaylie Monday led the way for UC with a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with 17 points for her third double-double of the season. The senior also grabbed her 600th career rebound in the game.  Kassie Monday tallied 16 points, a season-high eight rebounds, and seven assists in the win.  She also moved into third place on the career scoring list with 1636 surpassing Hope Peace-Akins.  LeeAnna McNulty notched 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks.  Emily Naranjo added a career-high eight points and two assists off the bench.

The Patriots jumped out to the early lead as Jaiden Cox converted a layup on the opening possession.  Just over a minute later Kassie Monday found Kaylie Monday for a layup in transition making it 4-3.  The Pomeroys went on a 9-2 run to take a 12-6 lead midway through the first quarter.  UC started to rally as Joy Kendrick found LeeAnna McNulty for a layup before Kayla Monday notched a steal and layup pulling Cumberlands with two at 14-12.  Kassie Monday netted five straight points to even the score at 17-17 before SMOTW sank a pair of free throws to take a 19-17 lead after the first period.

UC opened the second quarter with jumpers from Amy Thompson and Emily Naranjo to take a 21-19 lead, two minutes in.  The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes until Kendrick connected with McNulty for a layup to make it 27-23 with 5:52 remaining.  The Pomeroys  went on a 10-2 run, that spanned three minutes, before Naranjo connected with McNulty for a layup pulling UC within two at 33-31.  Kassie Monday added an eight-foot jumper in the closing minute of the half cutting the deficit to 36-34 at the break.

Both teams came out hitting shots until Burke found Kaylie Monday on the wing for a three-pointer making it 40-39. Kendrick added a jumper at the 7:15 mark to even the score at 41-41.  Kassie Monday connected with Kaylie Monday and McNulty for buckets as part of a 11-0 Cumberlands run to make 52-41 midway through the third quarter.  In the closing minute of the period, Kaylie Monday found Kassie Monday for a three-pointer before Kaylie Monday added a three in the closing seconds to extend the lead to 61-46.

Jaiden Cox tallied an assist and a transition layup to extend the Patriots lead to 65-48 just over a minute into the fourth quarter.  The two teams traded possession before Kaylie Monday found McNulty for a layup to make it 71-50 midway through the period.  Both teams traded points until Naranjo converted a putback to make it 77-57 with 1:24 remaining.  SMOTW closed out the game on an 8-0 for the 77-65 final.

The Patriots return to the court Sunday, December 15th, when they travel to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico to take part in the LYNC8 Classic.  UC will take on Puerto Rico Mayaguez with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
