Late Rally Not Enough as Patriots Fall in Overtime

Williamsburg, KY – The University of the Cumberlands women's basketball team had five players in double figures and had a pair of double-doubles, however, it wasn't enough as they fell to Milligan 90-89 in overtime Tuesday afternoon.

Kaylie Monday led the way for UC with 21 points, ten steals, and nine assists for her fourth double-double in the last five games.  Lakin Burke added 20 points, ten rebounds, while Anaia Hoard netted 18 points and grabbed five boards.  Kassie Monday chipped in 12 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds, while LeeAnna McNulty finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

The Patriots opened the game with a 3-0 run, before Milligan scored seven unanswered points to take the 7-3 lead.  Burke converted back-to-back baskets to even the score a minute later, before a Kaylie Monday layup sparked an 8-0 run to give UC a 15-9 lead with 3:29 remaining.  The Buffaloes closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run to tie the score at 17-17.

Kassie Monday notched three straight assists as before Kaylie Monday added a fast break layup to make it 27-26 with 7:07 remaining.  There were three lead changes over the next four minutes as Kassie Monday converted a layup putting UC back in front 35-34 with 2:42 left.  Hoard added a jumper in the closing minute, however, Milligan took a 41-39 lead at the break.

The Buffaloes opened the third quarter on an 8-4 run, however, three straight points from McNulty pulled the Patriots within three 49-46.  Milligan stretched their lead to 62-51 before Hoard converted a layup while Kassie Monday tallied a steal which lead to a Burke layup cutting it to 62-55.  Hoard tallied three points and an assists to pull Cumberlands within five at 65-60 heading into the fourth quarter.

UC opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run, that included four different scorers to take a 70-65 lead with 6:42 remaining.  Milligan went of a 10-3 run before Hoard completed a three-point play to make it 76-75 midway through the quarter.  The was tied twice and had a lead change leaving Milligan in front 82-80 in the final minute.  In the closing seconds of regulation, Joy Kendrick grabbed an offensive rebound and found Hoard for a jumper to even the score at 82-82 to force overtime.

Kassie Monday drained a three-pointer to open the overtime period.  Milligan took an 86-85 lead before Jaiden Cox converted a layup to make it 87-86 with 1:28 left.  After Semaj Clark sank a pair of free throws, Kassie Monday hit a layup putting UC in front 89-88 with 20 seconds left. Clark hit jumper with 1.2 seconds left to put the Buffaloes back in front and Patriots last shot was off the mark for the 90-89 final.

Cumberlands returns to the court Thursday, January 9, when they travel to Campbellsville, KY to face the third-ranked Tigers.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
