Williamsburg, KY – The #15 Patriots women's basketball team utilized a 22-point second quarter to take the lead and never look back as they knocked off #20 Freed-Hardeman 70-58 Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court. With the win, the Patriots improve to 17-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play, while the Lions move to 19-6 overall and 5-4 against the MSC.
Channing Lewis led the way for Cumberlands with 14 points, nine rebounds, and tied her career-high with five blocks.
Kaylie Monday netted 14 points to go along with four boards and two steals, while
Lakin Burke chipped in 13 points.
Kassie Monday notched nine points, five assists, and four rebounds in the win.
UC won the tip and on the opening possession
Kassie Monday connected with
Destiny Haworth for a three-pointer. Monday added the Patriots next four points, however, Freed-Hardeman outscored UC 14-4 to take a 14-7 lead with 4:01 remaining. The two teams traded baskets before Monday found
Amy Thompson from behind-the-arc as Cumberlands cut the deficit to 19-14.
Thompson opened the second quarter hitting her second straight three-pointer, which sparked a 7-0 giving the Patriots a 21-19 advantage a minute in. Midway through the period,
Victory Fredricks earned a block, while Lewis converted a pair from the charity stripe to make it 23-22. With four minutes left in the first half,
Joy Kendrick grabbed an offensive rebound and putback, while Lewis added a pair of fastbreak layups to extend UC's lead to 32-23 with 3:03 left. Kendrick and
Kaylie Monday combined for Cumberlands final four points of the quarter as UC converted 58.3% from the field to take a 36-27 lead.
Burke added back-to-back buckets to open the third quarter as UC extended their lead to 40-30. A couple minutes later Lewis recorded a block and on the transition
Kassie Monday connected with
Kaylie Monday for a three-pointer in the corner.
Kaylie Monday sank two addition shots from behind-the-arc, off assists from
Kassie Monday and one from Lewis, to make it 49-38 with 3:30 left. The Lions netted the final three-points of the quarter as UC took a 51-41 lead into the fourth.
Freed-Hardeman scored four unanswered points to open the fourth quarter before Haworth found Monday for her fourth three-pointer of the game, extending the lead to 54-45 with 7:35 remaining. On the next Patriots possession Lewis found Burke on the block for a three-point play, before draining a three-pointer to give UC a 60-49 advantage. Two minutes later Lewis hit her second three off an assist from Haworth to make it 65–51 with 3:15 remaining. UC closed it out with three from the charity stripe for the 70-58 final.
Cumberlands out rebounded Freed-Hardeman 30-20, while the Patriots held a 16-7 edge in assists.
UC will return to the court, Thursday, February 15 when they host (RV) Lindsey Wilson. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
