UC Stays Perfect at Home With Win over Blue Raiders

Williamsburg, KY – The 5th ranked Patriots took down Lindey Wilson College to remain perfect at home on Thursday night. Cumberlands move to 23-2 on the year and 8-1 in the MSC after their 85-75 win over the Blue Raiders.

Four Patriots finished the game in double figures led by Anthony Johnson who went for 18 points, 4 stl, and 3 reb. J.J. Ramey had another good game for the Pats, scoring 17 points and grabbing four rebounds while Jonathan Brown added 16 points. Matthew Cromer finished with 11 points and tied for the team-lead in rebounds with five.

Cromer started the game with a steal and fastbreak layup followed by a DJ Jones steal that ended with a Ramey basket to give UC a quick lead. LWC responded with a lay in of their own before Brown scored his first bucket off a jumper in the paint. The Blue Raiders responded by taking their first lead of the game before a put back from Cromer and a coast-to-cast bucket from Jones gave the lead right back to the Pats. Lindsey evened things back up at 10-10 with 14:36 to play.

A Brown three put UC back on top before a pair of LWC makes negated their advantage. Both teams went back and forth over the next nine minute of play. Baskets from Tanner Walton and Tajahri Cave started the back-and-forth play prior to five-straight points from Ramey and a Robertas Jonaitis lay in evened the score back at 30-30 with 6:17 to play.

Ramey's second three of the half broke the tie to give UC a three-point advantage. Baskets from Johnson and Brown kept the lead. UC's final six points of the period came from the charity stripe as Johnson, Cromer, and Brown all knocked down a pair of FT's as UC took a 43-40 lead into the half.

UC opened the second half at the foul line as well as Jones hit two more. The Patriots lead grew to 10 behind a Jonaitis basket, five points from Cromer and a Jones fastbreak layup off Cromer's steal. Lindsey ended the streak with a made basket in the paint before Johnson hit a three followed by a fastbreak basket from Ramey to go up 60-46 with 13:38 to play.

The Blue Raiders battled back to within five over the next five minutes of action. Another Ramey three and a free throw from Jones stretched the lead back out to nine. LWC answered right back going on a 13-6 run, bringing the score to 74-72 in Cumberlands favor. UC ended the run after Johnson converted a layup, starting a run of their own that saw UC grow their lead back to 11 off two more Johnson layups and a reverse slam. The final thirty seconds saw another dunk, this time from Ramey that capped off the Patriots 85-75 victory.

The Pats will be back on Saturday as they travel to Georgetown College to take on the 23rd ranked Tigers. UC looks for their first road victory over GC since 2017.
